Overview[edit section | visual editor]

The Morphic Pool lies deep beneath the city of Baldur's Gate and is part of its Undercity. It serves as the place where the three Chosen Three have hidden the Elder Brain . Before it became a hiding place and breeding ground for Intellect Devourers it was used as a smuggling route by the Knights of the Shield[1]. It serves as the first location in a sequence towards the ending of the game. It can only be accessed during the quest Confront the Elder Brain.
The Morphic Pool is entered by interacting with a skiff at the Morphic Pool Dock in the Undercity Ruins. A cutscene plays where the party travels with the skiff through the water and a loose stalactite falls down on the skiff, causing the party to plunge in the water. The party swims ashore and is immediately warned by the Elder Brain, which demands obedience.
Locations[edit section | visual editor]
Landing Area[edit section | visual editor]
The party comes ashore at X: -889 Y: 3720; the only way up is via a cliff leading upward. At the top is a Wooden Chest with 2 healing potions of higher grades ( Potion of Superior Healing and / or Potion of Supreme Healing) and a desk with an Inventory Report and a pile of gold on it.
From the clifftop the party can cross a bridge, leading to a cavernous labyrinth on the other side. On the left is another, broken, bridge which can be jumped over. Beyond it is a heap of empty crates, but a successful DC 10 Survival Check reveals a dirt mound at X: -916 Y: 3682 which contains a Wooden Chest. Inside is a Personal Note, gold, random Valuables and potions, and (possibly) random rare alchemical ingredients.
The road to the right splits a few times; all rooted bridges lead towards the brine pools. Along the paths several headless corpses are strewn. Several Intellect Devourer lookouts wait for the party on the paths, but flee on sight towards the brine pools instead of attacking. It is possible to shoot them down using the turn-based mode.
On the western side at X: -950 Y: 3716 is a small area which served as storage for inventory. A Heavy Chest with gold and a Metal Trunk with Rare and Uncommon arrows is found there. Moving from the storage to the northwest leads to a few dead Intellect Devourers. A jump can be made to a space where the corpse of Listelia Dryselis lies. She can be communed with to using Speak with Dead. The party can potentially jump further, reaching the brine pools without having to use any of the bridges.
While moving around the area the party becomes Mindbroken from time to time by the Elder Brain's psyche-shattering might. All members must pass a DC 20 Constitution Saving Throw or be momentarily Stunned.
Brine Pools[edit section | visual editor]

At the center of the area is a cluster of small unmarked brine pools around X: -925 Y: 3758. As the party approach this area, they can recognize an ambush with a successful DC 20 Perception Check. It ambush can be avoided by sneaking through the area using hide or invisibility.
The ambush consists of a large host of Intellect Devourers and Intellect Gluttons. When several are killed, an additional wave spawns. The Emperor remarks that something is corrupting the creatures.
From the pools the path leads north and splits in two, a broken bridge continues the path further, the other way leads to a large pile of stones which can be broken apart (X: -898 Y: 3757). The stones can only be damaged by Force or Thunder damage[2]. However, if the party managed to bypass the aforementioned ambush, breaking the wall most certainly attracts the hostile creatures.
After destroying the stones a path opens up, it leads to a cliff where the party can jump to a ledge on the other side containing an Opulent Chest. The chest contains several random spell scrolls of Rare and / or Very rare grade.
Broken Bridges and a Locked Door[edit section | visual editor]
Following the main path the party must jump over two broken bridges, ending up at an area with a locked door and a pathway going down towards the water.
If Gortash is allied with, he is waiting at the second bridge, ready to assist the party with his Netherstone. He urges the party on and run towards the locked door further along the path. The party can choose to strike Gortash. The first time, he issues a warning and kicks the player character if they react with sarcasm to his complaint. If struck a second time, he turns hostile[3].
The locked door ( DC 15 Sleight of Hand Check) is at X: -895 Y: 3817. Inside it lies Droralias Dryselis' corpse. If Droralias' Teddy Bear is returned to her (by placing it on her corpse), companions may comment on it, mentioning they did not deserve this[4], another reason to kill the brain.
Also inside the room is a Rustic Chest containing a Hastily Written Note and a Potion of Angelic Reprieve.
Morphic Pool's Waters[edit section | visual editor]

Following the pathway down leads to the Morphic Pool's waters. The Elder Brain tries several times to break the party's minds using Mindbroken, again requiring several DC 20 Constitution Saving Throw to avoid becoming Stunned. Once the waters are reached, the party (and Gortash, if present) take control of the Netherstones to confront the Elder Brain, which slowly rises from the water, having become a Netherbrain.

- ↑ See Old Ledger.
- ↑ Upon examining the stones there is no specific mention of Bludgeoning resistance or immunity, but the stones are immune to it. An easy way to break them open is by using Smokepowder Bombs.
- ↑ Compared to other places Gortash can be fought, a battle here is significantly easier. Not only are there no traps, but no Steel Watchers or Banites are present to assist him.
- ↑ Referring to both dead sisters.
- ↑ If alive and allied to the player.
- ↑ On Listelia Dryselis' body at X: -967 Y: 3741.
