Transcribing scrolls

Transcribing scrolls is game mechanic which allows wizard characters to add wizard spells to their spellbook by using scrolls.

Overview[edit section | visual editor]

Wizards who find a scroll for a spell may permanently transcribe (copy) it into their spellbook at the cost of consuming the scroll plus 50 gp 50 gp per level of the spell.[1] Wizards (except for Bladesingers) get a discount of 50% when transcribing spells from the school of magic associated with their subclass. A wizard must have at least one spell slot of the same level as the spell to be able to transcribe it, meaning it is not possible to transcribe the scroll of a level 3 spell without first having a level 3 spell slot.

Game mechanic[edit section | visual editor]

Spell transcribing may be done in one of two ways:

  1. By right-clicking a scroll in a wizard's inventory and selecting "Learn Spell". If the spell is already known, the option is greyed out and says, "Spell already known".
  2. By opening a wizard's spellbook (from the character screen or with the shortcut "K"), and clicking the button Spell Transcribing Icon.webp "Learn More Spells". This opens a window titled "Transcribe Scroll to Spellbook", which displays all scrolls available for transcribing. After selecting the scrolls a character wants to transcribe, the "Learn" button must be clicked. The total cost of learning is shown above the button.

Multiclassing[edit section | visual editor]

  • A multiclassed character can use any transcribed wizard spell with any of their own spell slots. However, transcribed spells must be prepared as wizard spells, and so are limited by the number of wizard spell preparation slots available. The quantity of these slots is determined by the sum of a character's wizard level and Intelligence modifier.[2]
    • If a wizard tries to transcribe the scroll of a wizard spell with too high a level, "Learn Spell" is greyed out and says "Wizard level too low", however, this is not necessarily true. In fact, to transcribe a higher-level spell scroll, the effective spellcaster level of that character's spellcasting classes must be high enough to cast that spell. A character only needs one wizard level to transcribe any wizard spell contained on a scroll.[3] For example, a wizard 1/bard 2 character has 2nd-level spell slots, and thus can transcribe the 2nd-level wizard spell Detect ThoughtsDetect Thoughts; although, in this case they would not be able to learn 2nd-level spells from either class during level up.
    • A character's effective spellcaster level is largely dependant on which of their spellcaster classes are full-, half-, and one-third casters.
  • In the event of a class change, if a character is no longer a wizard, they lose access to their transcribed spells. However, if the same character later takes at least 1 level in wizard, previously transcribed spells can be prepared again.

Wizard spells without scrolls[edit section | visual editor]

The following wizard spells do not have an acquirable scroll, and thus cannot be learned by transcribing scrolls, and can only be learned through leveling:

Scrolls that cannot be transcribed[edit section | visual editor]

Wizards cannot transcribe scrolls containing spells that do not belong to their class, such as spells exclusive to druid, cleric, paladin, or ranger. In the rare cases where the party finds scrolls containing spells exclusive to other classes, wizards may still cast them, but cannot transcribe them to their spellbook for future use. Below is a list of scrolls not native to the wizard class:

Notes and references[edit section | visual editor]

  1. If the Wizard does not have the required gold in their inventory, the cost of learning new spells is drawn from other characters in the party.
  2. The Warped Headband of Intellect can be used to guarantee a minimum of 4 wizard spell preparation slots.
