Adamantine Forge (location) | ||||

“...somewhere deep, loud, and hot as the Hells themselves. Within the Underdark's bowels, beyond an ancient stronghold, hovers a giant hammer, waiting to fall.„
Overview[edit | edit source]
The Adamantine Forge is an area inside Abandoned Refuge, adjacent to the Grymforge area, and shares the same region. From the area where the waypoint is located, a rocky path descends to X: -568 Y: 243, to the forge mechanism.
The forge itself is a gargantuan round platform with four lesser round daises, curved paths between them with gaps for the lava to flow down, and a crucible in the middle. It has two positions: upper (initial) and lower, to which it must be moved during the forging process. From the upper position, at X: -570 Y: 229, the party can also jump onto a crumbled structure that leads to a lava lake with a Lava Elemental wandering about, where the quest can be started or progressed.
Experience for discovering this medium-sized location is gained halfway down the broken staircase: 75XP, 150XP, or 180XP at character levels 4, 5, or 6, respectively.
Using the Adamantine Forge[edit | edit source]
The basic elements controlling the forging process are scattered around the platform: the mould chamber (with the lever that ejects the mould after crafting) is near the crucible, the lever which lowers the hammer is in the middle of one of the daises, and the valve that allows a portion of lava flow into the crucible is near the furnace, on a grate near another dais.
When poured in, lava covers all the platform surface save for the four daises, curved paths between them, and the grates near the valve. The top of the crucible also remains uncovered - to receive the hammer's blow.
Instructions for operating the forge can be found in a book obtained from Xargrim's corpse in the Ebonlake Grotto in Underdark:

“Place the ore and mould into their respective chambers.
Pull the lever to lower the hammer and prepare the ore for smelting.
Open the valve to allow lava into the crucible, and drop the hammer again to forge the product.
„
Every recipe requires one Mithral Ore. However, there are only two pieces of ore available. One can be found southwest of the Ancient Forge Waypoint, following the path down to a lava flow. The vein is clearly visible on the opposite "shore" at X: -645 Y: 255. The other can be found in a library-resembling area located east from the path leading down to the Forge platform. The vein is bulging from the archway at X: -558 Y: 278.
Therefore, the player character is able to craft any two items from the following list:

Any mould can be used twice to craft two identical items. To do this, the party must first eject the previously used mould from the Mould Chamber via the lever, pick it up and place it inside again, and repeat the whole cycle.
The first time the Lava Valve is used, Grym appears to defend the forge. Also, during the fight with it, several Magma Mephits emerge from surrounding lava.
To raise the platform, a button located behind the hammer-operating lever can be used.
Raising the platform to its initial position makes the forge nonfunctional. Therefore, if the platform is raised before a second item is created, further crafting becomes impossible. The player character must repeat the crafting cycle for both items and only then use the button to return upwards.[Needs Verification]
History[edit | edit source]
Adamantine is an incredibly hard alloy, forged at very high temperatures by alloying an adamant ore with mithral. Due to the difficulty of creating it, adamantine is usually produced by dwarves.
The Adamantine Forge was probably first constructed along with the Grymforge fortress in an unknown age by a group of Sharran followers. The inscription on the plaque at the entrance to the platform implies that the forge itself probably existed even before Ketheric Thorm's coming, as its wording melted away "several centuries" ago. After its take over by Dark Justiciars of Shar, the forge was redesigned by Silouv Yali, a gnome well known for his talents for wizardry and converted to the Sharran faith by the Sharran priestess Sister Ansar. After a sequence of experiments, he managed to find a way to bring its temperatures high enough to produce adamantine.
However, Silouv Yali's magnum opus was not the forge, but Grym, a powerful construct said to be immune to both blades and spells, an eternal guard of the forge. Unfortunately for Dark Justiciars, Yali used most of the available adamantine for creating the automaton, and thus nearby veins became too scarce to provide enough metal for the Sharrans' armaments.[1]
After all the Dark Justiciars were eliminated by an Orthon, the Adamantine Forge sank into darkness once more.
