Emmeline Hallowleaf, and her husband  Arnell Hallowleaf, raised  Shadowheart, originally known as Jenevelle Hallowleaf, in a Selûnite household in the forests outside Baldur's Gate.^[1] As a child, Jenevelle undertook a Selûnite coming-of-age ritual in which she was left alone in the woods and trusted to use Selûne's guidance to return to her family. However, the villagers discovered a Sharran spy near the village, and learned that his accomplices sought to abduct Jenevelle. Arnell took on his wolf form to quickly travel the woods to find Jenevelle, but she did not know about his curse, and panicked at the sight of the wolf, allowing enough time for the Sharrans to find and abduct both of them, as well as Emmeline.

After their capture, Emmeline and Arnell were kept in the Cloister of Sombre Embrace for about 40 years as Shadowheart grew up there. During this time, Shadowheart was indoctrinated and made to 'practice' Sharran techniques, such as trickery, interrogation, and torture, on her parents.

Involvement[edit section | visual editor]

Emmeline and Arnell are in the Cloister of Sombre Embrace. As part of Shadowheart's personal quest, Daughter of Darkness, she is forced to make the choice of letting them die and freeing herself of her incurable wound, or freeing them and having to live with the wound the for rest of her life. Both Arnell and Emmeline urge Shadowheart to let them die and free herself, but the player character can persuade Shadowheart to free them through a  DC 20 Religion or Persuasion Check.

If Emmeline and Arnell are freed, they become camp followers and reveal information about themselves and Shadowheart's past. Arnell is more talkative than Emmeline, as Emmeline is a human with a natural lifespan much shorter than Arnell's, and her memory is fading with age.

Attacking Emmeline or Arnell at any point turns Shadowheart against the party.

↑ Multiple things point to Shadowheart having grown in Moonhaven, the former name for the now ruined Blighted Village, such as her reaction when picking up the  Old Schoolbook or her scene at the Selûnite statue behind the mill. However, this is difficult to confirm as different sources in-game indicate that the village was destroyed over a hundred years ago by  Ketheric Thorm's dark justiciar army, and Shadowheart is estimated to be roughly fifty years old. Conflicting timelines regarding the village and its destruction also do not line up, thus, it is possible that the intent during development was that she and her family indeed lived in Moonhaven, but that these inconsistencies were never properly fixed for release.
