Act One[edit section | visual editor]
Flind is the warlord of a vicious band of gnolls gathered outside of The Risen Road Cave. The gnolls trapped Rugan and Olly, who are transporting goods for Zarys.[3]
On her first turn in combat, if she moves near any party member, Flind mentally links with them, revealing that she is infected with a Mind Flayer Tadpole. The first Wisdom check made in dialogue with her can be bypassed through Illithid Persuasion if it has not already been used.
The party can convince Flind to attack Rugan and Olly or search for the source of the Voice and then convince her to attack her fellow gnolls:
- Divert her attention to the cave - perhaps there's more meat inside?
- Search her mind for the source of the Voice.
- Use the power within you to make her obey the Voice; to brave the flames and feast on the meat in the cave.
- Conjure the mewlings of easy prey into her mind, centring it within the nearby cave. (DC 12)
- Withdraw from her mind, and prepare to strike.
A failed check triggers combat.
Depending on the choices made in the dialogue tree, the following options may appear:
- She wants meat? Command her to feast on the other gnolls. (DC 15)
- Harness her anger - the meat in the cave must die. (DC 10)
- You are of the same pack - command her to devour the other gnolls. (DC 15)
- Urge her to obey the Voice; to brave the flames and feast on the meat in the cave. (DC 10)
- Fight back, redirecting the gnoll's fury against her own pack. (DC 20)
- Counter her rage with your own, unleashing your battle frenzy within her mind.[5]
- Fill her mind with a distracting joke. 'What's the difference between man and meat?[6]
A failed check may trigger combat or further dialogue options depending on the check.
The following options appear after she is ordered to kill the cave survivors:
- Exert your mental power, commanding her to leave. (DC 10)
- She wants meat? Dominate her mind, ordering her to feast on the other gnolls. (DC 15)
- Sever the mental connection, and prepare to strike.
A failed check triggers combat.
The following options appear after she is ordered to kill the other gnolls (whether or not the cave survivors were killed):
- Dominate her mind, commanding her to feast on herself. (DC 10)
- Harness your willpower, and order her to devour herself. (DC 15)
- Exert your mental power, commanding her to leave. (DC 10)
- Sever the mental connection, and prepare to strike.
A failed check triggers combat.

Tactics[edit section | visual editor]
Flind is a dangerous enemy who can be encountered early when exploring aimlessly. She has a respectable AC, a high amount of hit points, and powerful attacks, which altogether make her a deadly foe. Her unique flail attacks vary between dealing massive amounts of damage, paralysing, or turning a party member hostile for a time. The biggest threat is her frenzied state, which allows her to use all three of her unique flail attacks in one multiattack, possibly killing an opponent in a single round.
Flind's high initiative almost always allows her to act first in combat. She immediately seeks out the first party member she sees to initiate a conversation, which presents an opportunity to use Illithid Powers to turn her against her pack. It is possible to command her to kill Rugan and Olly and then force her to turn against her pack afterwards. Turning her against her pack is recommended, as fighting Flind and her pack at the same time can be very difficult. It can be helpful to have the character interacting with Flind have a high Wisdom score while also receiving the benefits of Mark of the Shifter, Owl's Wisdom and Guidance to increase their odds of success. Once she is convinced to betray her pack, the party should focus on the Gnoll Hunters as they often target the party instead of Flind. Their frenzied multiattack arrow shots can be devastating, so it is best to kill them as quickly as possible with AoE attacks like Cloud of Daggers or Alchemist's Fire before they can frenzy.
The best way to engage Flind is to sneak up behind her and sneak attack the hunters in front of her to initiate combat. It is important to have Flind be able to initiate conversation on her first turn to ensure the party interact with her as described above.
When alone, direct combat with Flind is avoidable by passing the two Wisdom checks to compel her to kill herself. If this option is unavailable, Flind is quite dangerous up close; in her frenzied state, she can easily kill party members in a single turn. One potential strategy involves restricting her movement with spells like Grease, Web and Entangle, and then pelting her at range.

Notes[edit section | visual editor]
- ↑ In the game's data, Flind is defined as a Gnoll Flind, which is a type of fiend; however, like regular gnolls, they are tagged as humanoid. Consequently, Flind can also be affected by spells that only affect humanoids, such as Hold Person. In D&D 5e, flinds were originally a type of humanoid, as published in Volo's Guide to Monsters (2016), but were changed to fiends in the later published Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse (2022).
- ↑ 'Flind' is not this creature's real name, but rather her race, gnoll flind; she is a superior type of gnoll, which are physically more powerful and vicious than their lesser cousins.
- ↑ If the party approach close enough to spawn the caravan survivors and then take a long rest before engaging them, Flind's pack kills them off-screen and occupy the cave, preventing the mental link dialogue from triggering.
- ↑ 4.0 4.1 4.2 4.3 Dialogue file: Act1/Plains/PLA_ConflictedFlind_Flind
- ↑ This causes her to turn on the other gnolls.
- ↑ This results in three punchline options, each with a DC 18 Performance Check. On success, she and the gnolls turn hostile, but are Mirth-Wracked for two turns.
