Ansur is a dragon found in Baldur's Gate 3. Thought to be only a legend, it is revealed by Ulder Ravengard to be very real. The Duke gives the player a book that starts their journey to seek Ansur and its help against the Absolute.

About Ansur

As you enter The Dragon's Sanctum after your success in The Wyrmway Trials, you stumble upon the rotten carcass of a dragon. As you approach it, the corpse will reanimate and initiate dialogue.

As Ansur's spirit awakens, it takes over the character that initiated dialogue and speaks through them. Ansur introduces himself as the 'Heart of the Gate - butchered in flesh, risen in spirit'.

As he finishes his introduction, the Astral Prism stirs, and Ansur senses The Emperor's presence within it. As he seems to ask the player the reason of his coming, his words are in fact directed towards the Emperor. The illithid manifests himself out of the Prism, and greets Ansur, stating it's been too long since the two last met. Ansur greets the Emperor as Balduran, to which the Emperor responds he did not 'expect to hear this name again, least of all from the mouth of an old friend'. Here, Ansur implies that he and Balduran were more than friends (while staying evasive on the subject), until he was killed by Balduran himself. The dead dragon asks the Emperor if he's come to dance on his bones, to which the Emperor states that Ansur left him no choice. The player thus learns that Ansur offered to kill Balduran when he was turning illithid, thinking it was a merciful death and avoiding him the excruciating pain of ceremorphosis. Ansur taunts the Emperor, wondering how far the great Balduran has fallen. Whatever the player tries to say, Ansur will lash out at the Emperor, stating he gave him everything, and he was repaid in death. The fight against the corpse of the One Who Roars starts at this moment.

After the fight and the second death of Ansur, the Emperor will initiate dialogue with the player. If pressed on revealing his past, the Emperor will reveal that he was indeed Balduran before his illithid transformation, and shows the player a part of his story. It is revealed that it is Ansur that saved the Emperor from the Elder Brain's domination. Ansur was hellbent on helping Balduran to find a cure, but nearly became mad in the attempt. At this moment, Balduran didn't think himself as sick, and the behaviour of his friend was upsetting. The Emperor tried to convince Ansur that ceremorphosis was the best thing that happened to him, but he felt Ansur only saw a mind flayer, and not Balduran anymore. A night, Ansur decided to take matters into his own hands, and tried to killed Balduran in his sleep, out of mercy.

Out of self-preservation, the Emperor killed Ansur first, and says he does not regret this action (but rather the necessity of it), given all he has gained since.
