Overview[edit section | visual editor]
The Undercity is the seedy underbelly of the Lower City of Baldur's Gate featuring the crumbling remains of ancient cities. It is filled with various shady characters, undead, and temples to evil deities or other undesirable elements that the city above (or the denizens themselves) would prefer to keep hidden from its citizens.
Locations[edit section | visual editor]
Lower City Sewers[edit section | visual editor]

The Lower City Sewers is an expansive area covering much of the Undercity and also serves as the main access point into various nearby areas. The sewer system connects to almost every other location of the Undercity except the Murder Tribunal.
It can be accessed from several access points found throughout the Lower City area of Baldur's Gate. Entrances to the Lower City Sewers include manhole covers that are visible from the city streets, but additional passages can be found inside specific buildings (or used to access them), such as:
- Basilisk Gate Barracks (through the pit latrine in the Heapside Prison)
- Elfsong Tavern (through the Knights of the Shield Hideout in the cellar)
- Flymm Cargo (through the basement)
- Guildhall Entrance (and further through the Guildhall)
- Lady Jannath's Estate (through the Abandoned Cistern (see below))
- Szarr Palace (through Cazador's Dungeon, needs to be first opened from inside)[1]
Abandoned Cistern[edit section | visual editor]

The Abandoned Cistern is the westernmost part of the Lower City Sewers, serving as mud-setting pit for the sewer filth, separated from the other drainage by a system of sluice gates and valves. Access to this area requiures solving the Sluice Gate puzzle or passing a difficult DC 25 Athletics Check.
During the game the Abandoned Cistern serves as a hideout for the leader of a newly-sprung bandit gang, who goes by the name of the Stone Lord. Tadpoled and tricked into obedience by agents of the Cult of the Absolute, he had been rather successfully rooting out other lesser gangs loyal to Thieves' Guild, until its Guildmaster Nine-Fingers Keene set up a trap for him in the vaults of the Counting House.
Witnessing the events there eventually leads the party to the Abandoned Cistern, where Minsc and Boo can be fought and recruited, as part of the quest The High Harper.
Guildhall[edit section | visual editor]

The Guildhall[2] is a separate part of the Lower City Sewers. It is the underground headquarters of The Guild – the main criminal syndicate in Baldur’s Gate and the city suburbs.
The Guildhall is a joint management centre for disparate local gangs and solitary dealers, as well as a social space with shady characters and merchants dealing in "pre-owned stuff", illicit goods, services and leisures, and of course trading information. It can be directly accessed from the surface via a guarded entrance, or by navigating through the Undercity until they reach the main door.
During the game's events, the Guild (and by extension the Guildhall) is run by the Guildmaster Astele Keene, also known as Nine-Fingers Keene or simply Nine-Fingers. When the party arrive to Baldur's Gate, the Guild's positions have already been substantively undermined by the actions of a newly-sprung gang led by the Stone Lord. To regain turf, Nine-Fingers struck a deal with the Zhentarim, a trading and mercenary organization with back-alley morals. For this reason, several members of the Zhentarim are also present in the Guildhall.
Murder Tribunal[edit section | visual editor]

The Murder Tribunal is a secret part of the Undercity of Baldur's Gate. It is accessible only from Candulhallow's Tombstones, a small trade establishment on the fringes of the Eastway district of Baldur's Gate, in an alley behind the Elfsong Tavern and – quite conveniently – nearby the city graveyard.
The establishment trades in funeral services and respective goods and, though it may have been a legitimate business in the past, now it serves as a front for the Cult of Bhaal's activity within the city. The Murder Tribunal is the entry point for any follower of the Dread Lord who aspires to earn the title of an Unholy Assassin. Here the party can encounter Sarevok Anchev, well and alive, as well as several ghosts of other notable Bhaalspawn who have been a scourge for the Sword Coast and the neighbouring regions during their lifetime.
Dealing with the Murder Tribunal is practically inevitable if the party wishes to locate and confront one of the Chosen of the Dead Three, Orin the Red, the current leader of the Cult of Bhaal in Baldur's Gate.
Undercity Ruins[edit section | visual editor]

The Undercity Ruins is the northernmost part of the vast Undercity beneath the streets of Baldur's Gate. It can only be accessed through the Lower City Sewers, where approximately at X: -138 Y: 907 the minimap location marker changes after walking north through a stone archway.
The undercity ruins is a large cavernous area filled with the remains of long lost and damaged homes. It is the main area which connects the Bhaal Temple and the Morphic Pool to the rest of the Undercity. The Manslaughter Chasm which divides the ruins in two unequal halves, is crossed by a narrow bridge and becomes the perfect place for an ambush conducted by a group of Bhaal followers led by Farslayer of Bhaal Ghislev. Following a successful defense, the Undergrond Ruins then promptly leads the party to the Cult of Bhaal's demesne.
Ancient Lair[edit section | visual editor]

The Ancient Lair is a secluded part of the Undercity Ruins. It is accessible through a passageway just west of the Undercity Ruins waypoint, which leads into a separate location.
The lair is a subterranean crypt with an attached workshop, belonging to Mystic Carrion - a mysterious entity providing various esoteric services for the wealthy citizen of Baldur's Gate. Should the party wish to confront Mystic Carrion, exploring the Ancient Lair is a necessary part of the corresponding quest
The Ancient Lair is filled with multiple treasure chests, but, unfortunately, also guarded by a small horde of Undead creatures which may awaken when any of the chests are opened. To make matters worse, the party is inflicted with Spell Rot curse which forces magic users to take damage every time they cast a spell.
Bhaal Temple[edit section | visual editor]

The temple is the innermost sanctum to the followers of the Cult of Bhaal. Though the cult has been destroyed in the past, the temple's subterranean cavernous halls remained functionally intact. The temple was preserved by the efforts of Sarevok Anchev and the ghostly members of the Murder Tribunal and now serves as a home base for the cult risen from its slumber.
Currently the Cult of Bhaal is headed by Orin the Red. However, for the most time in the temple's recent history she had been only second-in-command. Orin became the acknowledged leader of the cult after a treachery committed against Bhaal's true Chosen – the Dark Urge. Thus, the events unfolding in the temple serve a culmination point in the story of the Dark Urge as an origin playthrough.
Access to the temple requires the Amulet of Bhaal which can be acquired upon completing the quest Impress the Murder Tribunal. Only the Dark Urge origin can enter the temple without the Amulet.
Morphic Pool[edit section | visual editor]

The Morphic Pool lies deep beneath the city of Baldur's Gate and is the northernmost part of its Undercity.
It is accessible only through the Undercity Ruins, where a path winding northward behind the Manslaughter Chasmleads to a small dock swarmed by Cranium Rats. The moored skiff here will take the party to the main Morphic Pool area with numerous brine pools, guarded by Intellect Devourers and Intellect Gluttons.
The Morphic Pool is where the Chosen of the Dead Three have hidden the Elder Brain once it was transported from the Mind Flayer Colony under the Moonrise Towers. It serves as the first location in a sequence towards the ending of the game and can only be accessed during the quest Confront the Elder Brain.

Notes and references[edit section | visual editor]
- ↑ In addition to this list, the iron grate in the lowest corner of the Beehive Goods' basement was reported to be interactable in earlier versions of the game, presumably providing an additional entrance to the Lower City Sewers. In the current game version this has been discarded.
- ↑ Also referred to as the Undercellar or Underbelly, although these terms can describe the whole Undercity area as well.
