Involvement[edit | edit source]

While most of Dolor's confirmed murders were committed in order to Impress the Murder Tribunal Impress the Murder Tribunal, the murder of his mother -- according to Ffion herself (via Speak with Dead Speak with Dead) -- was committed because she discovered his 'secret'. According to Ffion, Dolor enjoys murder, specifically killing people slowly.

Despite the fact that he was required to murder two targets in order to become an Unholy Assassin, Dolor continued and so far has successfully murdered four victims; Father Lorgan Father Lorgan, Franc Peartree Franc Peartree, Alexander Rainforest Alexander Rainforest and Belynne Stelmane Duke Stelmane. This string of successes has earned the attention[1] as well as admiration[2] of Bhaalist Doppelganger Doppelgangers who are witnesses to his murders and assist him if need be.[3]

His murders are currently being investigated by two Flaming Fist officers, Valeria Valeria and Devella Fountainhead Devella Fountainhead. Investigator Valeria is in Sharess' Caress having drinks as she has concluded that a refugee named Brilgor Brilgor is responsible for Father Lorgar's murder. However her assistant is much closer in finding the truth; Constable Fountainhead can be found in Elfsong Tavern investigating for clues in the room of Duke Stelmane, Dolor's latest murder victim.

Dolor can be encountered in the Lower City, on different occasions, first at the Wine Festival where he can be found posing as a wine connoisseur (under the alias Master Meztli) in order to poison Cora Highberry Cora Highberry. The party can expose him here, triggering a battle with several doppelgangers, during which he attempts to flee using his Spaceshunt Boots. If the Dimension Door Dimension Door spell is stopped by a counterspell, he turns Invisible Invisible and escapes.

If Dolor is able to flee from the Wine Festival, his next mark is Figaro Pennygood Figaro Pennygood, owner of Facemaker's Boutique. The party can disturb him mid-assassination and kill him in the ensuing battle. A paralyzed Devella Fountainhead is also there and is the first target of Dolor during combat. If Dolor is killed his looted corpse contains the Dirge of the Unholy Assassin, which reveals the location of the Bhaalist Murder Tribunal and the password Sicarius, as well as the Hand Bag with the severed hands required for entry.

If the player character independently seeks the Murder Tribunal by becoming an Unholy Assassin and certain conditions are met, Dolor must be fought at the Tribunal as a professional rival. Alternatively, Dolor can be convinced with a DC 25 Persuasion check to turn on the Tribunal as it does not serve Bhaal since they pit two perfect killers against each other. If Dolor is convinced, he states that Bhaal is not a god of decrees and doctrines and attacks the Guardians. If he survives the encounter he proceeds to attack Sarevok Anchev Sarevok Anchev as well as Echo of Amelyssan Echo of Amelyssan, Echo of Sendai Echo of Sendai, and Echo of Illasera Echo of Illasera. However he is instantly killed as Sarevok uses Power Word Kill Power Word Kill on the dwarf. If the Murder Tribunal is defeated and Dolor survives, he turns on the party and immediately attacks them.

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • Dolor typically uses his Spaceshunt Boots to Dimension Door Dimension Door out of the fight at the Wine Festival and then vanishes. This can be Counterspelled Counterspelled, meaning the party can kill him at his initial appearance and avoid a second fight. Though this item is only usable once per Long Rest, Dolor is scripted to be capable of re-using it to attempt escape even after their initial use is counterspelled. Incapacitating crowd control of some sort is recommended.
  • Because of Dolor's high Dexterity and access to the Alert feat, it can be difficult to start before him in combat. Furthermore, failing the appropriate checks can leave the party surprised, allowing Dolor to escape to this next target on unprepared parties.
  • To find Dolor at the wine festival, the party must have read any of the Bloodstained Parchments which can be found in several locations.
  • Fittingly, Dolor's name means "pain" or "grief" in Latin.
