Oath of the Ancients
Oath of the Ancients is one of the Subclasses of Paladin. These Paladins have a deep connection with the natural world and the light within it.
Subclass features[edit | edit source]
This subclass obtains all the features from its base class, Paladin, in addition to its unique features outlined below.
Level 1
- Here is the full text of the Oath of the Ancients. For more details, see Oaths and Oathbreaking.
Kindle the Light. Through your acts of mercy, kindness, and forgiveness, kindle the light of hope in the world, beating back despair.Shelter the Light. Where there is good, beauty, love, and laughter in the world, stand against the wickedness that would swallow it. Where life flourishes, stand against the forces that would render it barren.
Preserve Your Own Light. Delight in song and laughter, in beauty and art. If you allow the light to die in your own heart, you can’t preserve it in the world.
Be the Light. Be a glorious beacon for all who live in despair. Let the light of your joy and courage shine forth in all your deeds.

Oathbreaking actions[edit | edit source]
Spoiler warning: The following content contains unhidden spoilers. Read at your own risk. |
This section details actions which will cause the player to break the Oath of the Ancients
Global[edit | edit source]
- Killing someone non-hostile, even by "accident" (e.g., an NPC steps into an area-of-effect spell, such as Moonbeam or Spike Growth, and dies). This includes the petrified drow in the underdark
- Actions that guards do not like, or add the Witness status, appear to cause a broken Oath; even attacking Duergar after telling the Deep Gnomes you'll free them in Grymforge has caused this.
- Note that starting combat via conversational choices rather than attacking directly does seem to mitigate this most of the time.
- Shoving someone to their death also counts as breaking the Oath. This sometimes also includes evil characters such as Assassins of Bhaal in the arena where you fight Orin.
Act 1[edit | edit source]
- Attack Damays and Nymessa (tieflings who guard trapped Lae'zel) by any means, including options that occur through the dialogue.
- Playing as The Dark Urge, chop off Gale's hand at the point of his possible recruitment
- When the Shadow Druids reveal themselves, tell Kagha you won’t stand in her way.
- Prod the wing of the Exhausted Bird. Playing as The Dark Urge, this option runs as "Tear her wings off"
- Playing as The Dark Urge, break Pandirna’s legs
- Kill the Owlbear Cub after killing its mother.
- Attack Auntie Ethel in her house prior to starting an automated dialogue
- Succumb to Auntie Ethel’s will after you have put on a Whispering Mask.
- Trade one of your eyes to Auntie Ethel in exchange for a cure.
- Use Bitter Divorce wand to resurrect Connor Vinderblad after defeating Auntie Ethel
- Reveal the location of the Emerald Grove to Minthara, either showing her or allowing her to read your thoughts. Breaks your Oath even if you plan on luring her there to defend the grove.
- In Worg Pens, choose to attack Halsin while he is still in bear form, OR throw a rock at him, OR to leave him to the goblins’ mercy.
- Kill Anders (the false Paladin of Tyr at The Risen Road Toll House) without first talking with him, even if a fight began due to a failed pickpocket.
Rosymorn Monastery/Creche Y'llek
- Kill Varrl, when he refuses to fight you in sparring. Failing the roll to stab him non-fatally also break the Oath
- Playing as The Dark Urge, if you already have the Githyanki Egg, kick it off the cliffside when talking to Lady Esther
- Allow Nere kill the enslaved deep gnomes after he is freed from the cave-in.
- Side with Nere against Elder Brithvar and duergar rebels.

- Kill a spore servant that you can create if Glut joins the party during the Defeat the Duergar Intruders quest.
- Kill any of the petrified drow near the Selunite Outpost while they are still encased in stone
- Playing as The Dark Urge, at the Bibberbang field throw Baelen’s bag in the midst of spores.
- Playing as The Dark Urge, after killing Alfira, choose to "admire this beautiful death".
Act 2[edit | edit source]
- During the Punish the Wicked quest, order Madeline to stub herself (breaks the Oath regardless of the roll result)
- OR Call her a coward and deny her forgiveness
Note: Telling Madeline that it was not her fault and forgiving her is the only option that will preserve your Oath.
- First time talking to Dolly Thrice, turn the mechanism of the Moonlantern, causing her pain
- OR Choose to leave the pixie inside the Moonlantern, ignoring her plead.

- Side with Marcus when he attempts to kidnap Isobel
- Playing as The Dark Urge, reveal your depravity to the Strange Ox (which causes you to stab it to death)
- Let Questioners Jasin and Sumera wipe Minthara’s mind
- OR Take part in the execution and erase her yourself (for The Dark Urge, “Make her NOTHING” option).
- Convince Acolyte Marls to jump from the pier. Can be prevented by passing the subsequent Wisdom check, but if you fail it, you will break the Oath.
- Playing as The Dark Urge, speak with Steelclaw and try to remember what you did previously (makes you kill the cat)
- In the Shadowfell, let Balthazar take Aylin to deliver her to Ketheric Thorm
- Let Shadowheart kill Aylin
