Wulbren Bongle
Wulbren Bongle is a deep gnome who leads the Ironhand Gnomes. Wulbren despises the Gondians and the Steel Watch, and is working to destroy the Steel Watch Foundry in Baldur's Gate and rid the city of Gondians.
Overview[edit section | visual editor]
Background[edit section | visual editor]
Wulbren is the leader of the Ironhand Gnomes and a close friend of Barcus Wroot, though their relationship becomes strained as events in the game unfold. He and the Ironhands were stationed in the Decrepit Village in the Underdark, which was raided by Duergar slavers sometime before the events of Baldur's Gate 3. Wulbren has since gone missing, and Barcus has been searching tirelessly to try and find him.
History[edit section | visual editor]
Wulbren Bongle is a descendent of Wolverforce Bongle, a member of clan Ironhand who, it is claimed, was spoken to directly by . Gaerdal implored Wolverforce to speak out against the Gondians who had falsely taken credit for the Ironhand's creations.[1] Wulbren himself has become obsessed with destroying the Gondians and restoring the name of clan Ironhand, possibly fuelled by his relation to Wolverforce.
Wulbren and the Ironhands were stationed at the Decrepit Village in the Underdark, surveying the area in search of Gaerdal Ironhand's formula for runepowder. While they were there, the village was ambushed by duergar slavers in collaboration with the Cult of the Absolute, who caught most of the gnomes and moved them to Grymforge.
Wulbren managed to find the formula in a small cache, but was captured as well. Recognised as their leader, and now possibly the only surviving person with the knowledge of how to make runepowder, he was taken to Moonrise Towers.

Act Two[edit section | visual editor]
Wulbren, Nickels and Nimble are in a cell in Moonrise Towers Prison. If they are rescued, they can be directed or escorted to Last Light Inn. Upon arriving at the Inn, Wulbren becomes absorbed in planning. Barcus can be informed of his arrival, but their reunion is icy.[2] If the party ask for a reward, Wulbren directs them to Barcus for a reward, if he is present; he otherwise gives an amount of gold.
Rescuing Wulbren gains the following inspiration:
- Always a Way Out ( Criminal background)
- Breakout! ( Folk Hero background)
- Bugging Out ( Urchin background)
- Simple Tools, Great Works ( Guild Artisan background)
He later moves to the first room of Moonrise Towers after Ketheric Thorm is defeated, where he attempts to butter up the party to have them assist him in Baldur's Gate.
If Wulbren is not freed from Moonrise Towers before the party deals with the Nightsong, his corpse can be found in the Oubliette, along with those of all the other prisoners. Similarly, if Isobel is abducted by Marcus or killed during Resolve the Abduction while Wulbren is present at Last Light Inn, he dies when the location subsequently falls to the shadow curse. However, this can be prevented by not directing him toward the Inn when rescuing him, or by rescuing him after the Inn has already fallen.
Act Three[edit section | visual editor]
If Wulbren is rescued from Moonrise Towers in Act Two, he later moves to Gyldro Angleiron's cellar in Rivington. Gyldro is sympathetic to the plight of the Ironhand Gnomes and has agreed to provide shelter while Wulbren and the rest of his clan seek to remedy the problem of their years in exile and deal with the Gondians.[3] If spoken with, Wulbren asks the party to help him to blow up the Steel Watch Foundry, using a Runepowder Bomb, which starts Avenge the Ironhands. Once the Foundry is destroyed, he meets the party outside to kill any remaining Gondians. The party can side with Wulbren or against him. These choices can be accomplished peacefully, by defending the Gondians through intimidating him - or forcefully - by starting a fight. Alternatively, if Barcus survives up to this point, he can be pursuaded to stand up against Wulbren and talk down the other Ironhands, resulting in him taking up leadership and casting Wulbren out.
If the party side with Wulbren (in which case he leads them) or Barcus (who leads if convinced to oust Wulbren), the Ironhands assist in the final battle (see Gather Your Allies).
If Enver Gortash is killed without disabling the Steel Watch first, the Elder Brain takes control of the remaining Steel Watch, which destroy the Foundry, and kill all the Gondians before the party can meet them. If the party travel to the ruins of the Foundry after these events, Wulbren is there outside. He acts as if the party just sided with him against the Gondians and promises to assist in the final battle.
The tombstone of Wulbren's father Antunio Bongle is at the Graveyard of the Lower City.
Combat[edit section | visual editor]
When met in Moonrise Towers Prison, Wulbren has no equpiment, and can only use Throw Stone. When in Rivington he has equipment and corresponding weapon actions.

Idle banter[edit section | visual editor]
While in a cell in Moonrise Towers Prison, Wulbren, Nickels and Nimble discuss their predicament.
- Nickels
- The stone - I feel it. Hollow behind the back wall, and beyond... water?
- Wulbren Bongle
- I'd bet my last copper there's a pier nearby.
- Nimble
- This could be our chance, sir.
- Nimble
- We should leave - and soon.
- Wulbren Bongle
- That is the plan, Nickels.
- Nickels
- There's something evil here. Below, down, down... argh!
- Nimble
- Breathe - I've got you.
- Wulbren Bongle
- Unless this 'evil' can get us out of here, I don't want to hear about it.
- Wulbren Bongle
- It's only a matter of time 'til we're served up to the necromancer on a platter.
- Nimble
- We'll get you to Baldur's Gate, sir - I swear it.
- Wulbren Bongle
- Damn straight - without me everything will be for naught. The Ironhand Gnomes must succeed.

Notes and references[edit section | visual editor]
- ↑ Ironhand Gnomes: Our Grievances
- ↑ If the player character speaks with Wulbren after he is freed from Moonrise Towers and Barcus is alive, Barcus runs up excitedly to meet Wulbren, who quickly grows frustrated with him and yells out in exasperation, "Go home, Barcus." The player character then has the option to comment with Barcus that the relationship appears one sided.
- ↑ The party can explore Gyldro's home across from his smithy to learn more about his reasoning and motivations for aiding the Ironhand Gnomes. In particular, from reading his book Ironhand Gnomes: Our Grievances, it is likely that Wulbren, a charismatic figure in his own right, swayed Gyldro to their cause.
