Involvement[edit | edit source]

Act One[edit | edit source]

Guex can be found in the training area of The Hollow within the Emerald Grove. If the party interact with him, he reveals that he is frustrated that he cannot properly hit a dummy.

The player character can offer him ineffectual advice or train him by passing any of the following skill checks:

  • [ATHLETICS] Demonstrate a swing - show him the fluidity of movement he lacks. (DC 12)
  • [INSIGHT] No wonder you're struggling - you've no balance. Space your feet farther apart. (DC 10)
  • [HALF-ORC] [PERFORMANCE] Show him how to coil his shoulder muscles into a more intimidating stance before striking. (DC 7)
  • [WISDOM] Read his thoughts.
    • Clear your mind. Past mistakes don't matter. Focus on the present, the target.

The following options automatically succeed the check and will improve his training:

  • [WYLL] Try this swing. A little number I call 'The Legend's Strike'.
  • [GITHYANKI] Inspire fear with a war cry - loosen bowels before you spill them - hrath ajak!
  • [GITHYANKI] Try confusing your foe, like when you first saw me. Shout a question at them.
  • [BARBARIAN] Don't waste good anger on your thoughts - use it on that target!
  • [MONK] You need discipline, focus. Fix your gaze to a point, then guide your strikes to it.
  • [FIGHTER] Put one foot in front of the other. Let momentum aid your strikes.
  • [ROGUE] This isn't a joust. Feint with your sword, then kick between the 'legs' instead.

The following options automatically frustrate him and fail to improve his training:

  • Try hitting the target.

If the Detect Thoughts Detect Thoughts roll fails, Guex and everyone nearby gains the Temporarily Hostile status and initiate combat with the Players Party.

If the Athletics or Insight rolls fail, Guex will grow angry with the player character and can then be observed and heard to be more frustrated and worse at hitting the dummy.

If successful, the player character is rewarded with a Battleaxe and 10 Experience. Guex can also be observed and heard to be much happier and effective at hitting the dummy. Successfully helping him train is an inspirational event for the Soldier Soldier background called "To Arms!". It grants 1 Inspiration and 25 Experience.

If the party travel to the Mountain Pass or Shadow-Cursed Lands before resolving Kagha Kagha's ritual the Rite of Thorns, the tieflings will be expelled from the Emerald Grove and Guex's corpse can be found among the pile of refugees near the bridge to the Blighted Village.

In the event that Minthara Minthara and her raiding party is primed to assault the Emerald Grove, Guex will be atop the grove's ramparts alongside Pandirna Pandirna, busy filling up empty barrels with oil. If the raid has been stopped or if the goblins' leaders are dead, Guex will take part in the festivities at the party's Camp, occasionally chatting with Ikaron Ikaron in an attempt to get the latter to drink and lighten up.

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • Guex' fate in the event that the tiefling refugees leave for Baldur's Gate is left dubious as his body never appears in the Shadow-Cursed Lands.
