Involvement[edit | edit source]
Act One[edit | edit source]
Guex can be found in the training area of The Hollow within the Emerald Grove. If the party interact with him, he reveals that he is frustrated that he cannot properly hit a dummy.
The player character can offer him ineffectual advice or train him by passing any of the following skill checks:
- Demonstrate a swing - show him the fluidity of movement he lacks. (DC 12)
- No wonder you're struggling - you've no balance. Space your feet farther apart. (DC 10)
- Show him how to coil his shoulder muscles into a more intimidating stance before striking. (DC 7)
-
Read his thoughts.
- Clear your mind. Past mistakes don't matter. Focus on the present, the target.
The following options automatically succeed the check and improve his training:
- Try this swing. A little number I call 'The Legend's Strike'.
- Inspire fear with a war cry - loosen bowels before you spill them - hrath ajak!
- Try confusing your foe, like when you first saw me. Shout a question at them.
- Don't waste good anger on your thoughts - use it on that target!
- You need discipline, focus. Fix your gaze to a point, then guide your strikes to it.
- Put one foot in front of the other. Let momentum aid your strikes.
- This isn't a joust. Feint with your sword, then kick between the 'legs' instead.
The following options automatically frustrate him and fail to improve his training:
- Try hitting the target.
If the
roll fails, Guex and everyone nearby becomes hostile and initiates combat with the party. If the Athletics or Insight rolls fail, Guex grows angry with the player character and can then be observed and heard to be more frustrated and worse at hitting the dummy.
If successful, the player character is rewarded with a Battleaxe and 10 Experience. Guex can also be observed and heard to be much happier and effective at hitting the dummy. Successfully helping him train earns the inspiration for party members with the background.
If travelling to the Rosymorn Monastery Trail or the Shadow-Cursed Lands before resolving Kagha's ritual the Rite of Thorns, then the tieflings are expelled from the Emerald Grove and Guex's corpse can be found among the pile of refugees near the bridge to the Blighted Village.
In the event that Minthara and her raiding party is primed to assault the Emerald Grove, Guex can be found atop the grove's ramparts alongside Pandirna, busy filling up empty barrels with oil. If the raid has been stopped or if the goblins' leaders are dead, Guex takes part in the festivities at the party's Camp, occasionally chatting with Ikaron in an attempt to get the latter to drink and lighten up.

Idle banter[edit | edit source]
Before the assault on the Emerald Grove, Guex will be rallied by Asharak:
- Asharak
- Looking well, folks - keep it up.
- Guex
- Yes sir!
- Asharak
- I'm not 'sir'. I was a doorjack in Elturel.
- Pandirna
- 'Yes sir'.
- Guex
- Shut it, you - and help me with these barrels.
- Asharak
- Remember - get down to the cave as soon as you hear the horn.
- Guex
- What happens if they attack before we get the signal?
- Asharak
- I reckon you'll hear something.
- Asharak
- Almost done?
- Pandirna
- Nearly. We've ransacked the packs for anything that'll burn.
- Asharak
- Good. Reckon we can brave a few nights without lamp-light if it means burning these buggers.
He can also be seen filling barrels and talking with Pandirna:
- Pandirna
- Gods, this oil bloody stinks.
- Guex
- Not so bad as burning goblin will, I'd wager.
- Pandirna
- It seems... cruel, when you say it like that.
- Guex
- Cruel? Imagine what they'd do to us, given half the chance.
- Pandirna
- Can we just get this done, please? I want to get below before -
- Guex
- Before what? Afraid you might actually have to fight?
- Pandirna
- Look. Asharak already picked who he wanted on the walls, right? And it wasn't us.
- Guex
- You might be afraid of your own shadow, but some of us -
- Pandirna
- Puff out your chest all you like - I'm going where it's safe.
- Guex
- Would you be careful? We're going to spill if you don't stop shaking.
- Pandirna
- I'm not shaking.
- Guex
- Please, you're trembling like -
- Pandirna
- I'm not. Shaking.
- Guex
- All right...
Guex will occasionally chat with Kivak during the camp celebration if he survided the assault on the Emerald Grove:
- Guex
- We're alive, Kivak. Alive!
- Kivak
- But the others...
- Guex
- Tonight we drink to them!
- Kivak
- I can't lie - I'm going to miss this place a bit.
- Guex
- One sight of the city, and you'll forget all about it.
- Kivak
- I thought you'd never been.
- Guex
- Ah, but I know.
- Kivak
- I feel like I can breathe for the first time in months.
- Guex
- Less air, more ale!
Guex will also talk to Ikaron during the same event:
- Guex
- Grab a drink!
- Ikaron
- I'm fine.
- Guex
- Ah, loosen up, Ikaron!
- Guex
- Your mug's as sour as this ale. We're supposed to be celebratin'!
- Ikaron
- Well go bother someone else then.
- Guex
- Agh! Spilled my pint.
- Ikaron
- Not like you needed it.
If the party talks to Ikaron and convinces him to drink, their banter will change:
- Guex
- You'll have a drink, but not with me? Betrayal.
- Ikaron
- It's not like that.
- Guex
- You're looking flushed!
- Ikaron
- I am a bit light-headed.
- Guex
- Bah! Nothing another ale won't fix!
- Guex
- Are you weaving, or is it me?
- Ikaron
- Maybe you should drink some water.
- Guex
- I'm fine. One more, that's all.
- Ikaron
- I - all right.
- Guex
- There's an animal hiding in that shell, I bet.
- Ikaron
- I don't know what that means.
- Guex
- Have another drink and you'll know exactly what I mean.

Notes[edit | edit source]
- Guex' fate in the event that the tiefling refugees leave for Baldur's Gate is left dubious as his body never appears in the Shadow-Cursed Lands.
