Overview[edit | edit source]

The Rivington General is a weapons and armour store located across the Circus of the Last Days with the main entrance at X: 3 Y: -31, to the north of Arfur's Mansion. The establishment actually consists of two buildings, connected by a large open-air forge on a high stone-paved dais, which accommodates the whole complex to the gradually raising level of the ground.

The house of the proprietor and master smith, Gyldro AngleironGyldro Angleiron, who can be found near the forge, is a one-storied building with a huge subterranean cellar (see below); its door to the forge is at X: -1 Y: -56. The shop, overseen by a cheerful dragonborn ExxvikyapExxvikyap, is a two-storied building with its upper floor opening into the forge at X: -4 Y: -42.

Despite multiple laudatory blackboards placed inside the shop, most weapons on stands and in display cases are plain, save for several Uncommon items (all weapons are red-outlined). An unlocked wooden chest at X: 7 Y: -33 on the upper floor contains some gold.

The open-air smithy has two stone stairs from the street at X: -15 Y: -50 and from the back path at X: -9 Y: -49.

Interactions[edit | edit source]

Gyldro Angleiron is one of the characters who may be chosen by Orin the RedOrin the Red as a disguise to threaten the party.[1] If Gyldro is impersonated, he ultimately does not survive to relate his experience with anyone aside from the party immediately thereafter, and his corpse can be found later in the Bhaal Temple in Lower City.

Interactions with Gyldro Angleiron depend heavily on whether Orin has taken his place or not.

  • If Gyldro Angleiron is real, he is not talkative and rather rude, sending the party to trade to Exxvikyap. The only substantive question he is ready to discuss is the deep gnoomes of the Clan Ironhand whom he is deliberately sheltering in his cellar. If the party already know about it, Gyldro can explain his reasons to give refuge to the gnomes.
  • If Gyldro is replaced by Orin, she asks the player character to describe their favourite weapon and the way they prefer to kill. Characters with the Guild ArtisanGuild Artisan background can earn the Dream BigDream Big inspiration, if the correct sequence of answers is chosen.[2] After Orin threatens the party and disappears, they have to deal with the real Gyldro as well, using various ability checks to convince him they are not responsible for attacking him.
If convinced, Gyldro nevertheless disappears after the nearest Long Rest, and a Bloody Message is left behind in a puddle of blood.

Angleiron's Cellar[edit | edit source]

Blocked entrance to the gnomes' cave

This large cellar has become a base of operations to the Ironhand gnomes led by Wulbren BongleWulbren Bongle, who were exiled from the city. The cellar can be explored only if the deep gnomes of the Clan Ironhand survived the events of Act One and Act Two. If they were killed in Grymforge or perished in Moonrise Towers Prison, the cellar will be inaccessible.

There are two possible points of access, but only one of them can be used initially: a cave mouth at X: 30 Y: 29. Inside the cellar there is an iron ladder leading to a hatch at X: -2 Y: -63 (it is blocked from within until a lever is pulled in the cellar beneath).

When the party first approach the cave mouth, a passive DC 15 Survival check DC 15 Survival check is made. Success results in noticing small footprints leading into the cave.[3]

Once inside, the party is greeted by Hogi NunersHogi Nuners, who sends them to talk to "the boss" (i.e. Wulbren). Most gnomes who may have been encountered by the party in earlier Acts and survived can be met here: ThullaThulla, LariddaLaridda, PhilomeenPhilomeen, and Barcus WrootBarcus Wroot.

Wulbren's "office" inside the cellar

Wulbren Bongle is in the farmost room of the cellar. He tells the party of his hatred towards the Gondians and blames them for creating the Steel WatchSteel Watch. He proposes to destroy the Steel Watch Foundry, which starts the Avenge the IronhandsAvenge the Ironhands and Disable the Steel WatchDisable the Steel Watch quests. If the party agree, Wulbren provides them with the Runepowder Bomb. However, if Barcus Wroot survived to this moment, he is also here and chimes in, attempting to talk Wulbren down. If spoken to afterwards, Barcus suggests the party listen to the Gondians as well before resorting to drastic means.

Alternatively, if the party have already gained access to the Wyrm's Crossing with the help of the gnomes and took up the Deal with the GnomesDeal with the Gnomes quest, they can attack Wulbren to provide his head as a trophy to Manip FalcäoManip Falcäo.

Near the fireplace the party can find the gnome trader BumpnagelBumpnagel.

Other encounters nearby[edit | edit source]

There are several NPC vignettes placed around the post office.

  • Two refugees, Arne JacobsonArne Jacobson and Belron StrongstepBelron Strongstep are discussing possible options to get inside the Baldur's Gate. Belron complains about the guards demanding high bribes for allowing entrance, but nonetheless forbids Arno to pawn a ring which belonged to his wife (seemingly deceased) to scrape together the needed money.
  • Two Baldurians, GethinGethin and IwanIwan banter about the civilian militia which has been organized to keep the refugees in line. Iwan's daughter RhettRhett is eager to take part in patrolling.
  • A halfling Sylvie SummerworthSylvie Summerworth clearly states her disappointment and bewilderment with the Sword Coast Couriers for repeatedly losing her letters. Her counterparts RandalfRandalf and BalgorBalgor try to calm her down. Sylvie is certain the post office is simply taking advantage of its monopoly on the service, and that the approaching army does not actually pose a threat.

  2. Answering Orin's question about killing someone close to them, the interacting party member must choose the line "Perhaps. If there was no other option".
