Overview[edit | edit source]

Unlike regular quasits, Shovel has unique dialogue and can be interacted with after summoning her.[1] Her name can be changed to Fork or Basket through dialogue.

Shovel is a carefree and upbeat fiend that finds joy in murder, arson, and eating babies. She is impatient and very easily bored, but despite her irreverent demeanour, Shovel can be deeply loyal even when denied the pleasures of violence. Shovel is terrified of sorcerers with the subclasses Storm Sorcery and Wild Magic because she dislikes their "thunder magic and pain". Shovel loves dragons, and a Draconic Bloodline sorcerer and / or dragonborn player character successfully convincing her they are a dragon makes her very excited. If failing to convince her, she is disappointed and refers to the party member as a "fake dragon", and she is no longer afraid.

It is possible that multiclassed characters cannot permanently obtain Shovel's summon even if they have levels in one of the above mentioned classes.

Summoning and permanently acquiring Shovel[edit | edit source]

Through the Scroll of Summon Quasit found in the Apothecary's Cellar, there are several ways a party member may learn to summon her:[2]

  1. The scroll must be cast by a party member with any other class or race besides the ones mentioned above. Then a Warlock, Wizard or Sorcerer must speak with Shovel after completing the dialogue tree below. This spell is not lost upon respeccing. The dialogue tree answers to guarantee the spell:
    • Shovel: So. You're Shovel's master now? Fine.
    • Response: Your name is 'Shovel'? and then with Shovel is fine.
    • Speak to her again to receive the spell to summon her.
    • The scroll must NOT be cast by party members with the subclasses Storm Sorcery, Wild Magic or Shadow Magic, because this locks the party out of the dialogue tree above. If casting the scroll as a dragonborn, Shovel must NOT be deceived. The other two dialogue choices redirect to the dialogue tree.
  2. The scroll can also be scribed by Wizards, adding Find Familiar: Cheeky Quasit Find Familiar: Cheeky Quasit to the Wizard tab in their spellbook. Like all spells scribed by Wizards, it only persists through respeccing amongst the Wizard subclasses. If the character who scribed this spell respeccs to a different class than a Wizard, they lose access to Shovel until they respecc at least one level to the Wizard class again.

Alternatively, it is possible to acquire Shovel with any dialogue options if using the scroll in Act Two. This allows to rename Shovel and still get the spell. However it is posssible to lose out on some of the dialogue if using this method.[Needs Verification]

History[edit | edit source]

Shovel was owned by the necromancer Ilyn Toth, who was a cruel and neglectful master. He often verbally and physically abused her and forgot to feed her. Despite this, Shovel enjoyed working with her former master.[3]

Attacks and abilities[edit | edit source]

Similar to other Find Familiar Find Familiar summons, Shovel excels at providing chip damage and harassment in battle. Defensively, her fragile body is at best a distraction against most enemies. Her invisibility skill is particularly useful for scouting enemy positions and initiating fights via surprise attacks.

Unlike ordinarily summoned quasits, Shovel has her own unique lines when taking actions. Like all familiars, Shovel can drink Elixirs, but increasing her Strength does not help her outside of increasing jump distance since her attacks always use Dexterity.

Notes & references[edit | edit source]

  1. Shovel is referred to as she in the description of the Steam achievement Rude, Crude, and Full of Attitude: Find and summon the quasit Shovel. Or is her name... Fork? Maybe Basket?
  2. As of Patch 8, only one character can learn how to summon shovel. If a Wizard scribes this spell, another Warlock, Wizard, or Sorcerer cannot get the "spell-shite" dialogue which grants Shovel as a familiar. Prior to Patch 7, it was possible to learn the spell for two party members by scribing the scroll on a wizard and then talking to Shovel with another eligible character. This could be accomplished by speaking to Shovel for the second time with a Storm Sorceror or Wild Sorceror, with the first conversation happening by the summoner of a different class. Specifically, the first summoner had to be a class other than Storm or Wild Sorceror, and then carry the conversation through the discussion about the book. Shovel then had to be immediately spoken to again as a Storm or Wild Sorceror, with Shovel then becoming a permanent spell option.
