Elixirs

Similar to Potions, Elixirs are consumable items which can be consumed as a bonus action to apply a variety of beneficial effects. Unlike Potions, the effects of an Elixir last until either taking a long rest or drinking another Elixir. Many Elixirs can be created with Alchemy.
A character can only benefit from the effects of one elixir at a time: in most cases, drinking an elixir immediately cancels any active effects of one previously consumed.
Other activities can cause elixir benefits to end, such as praying at the altar to in the Gauntlet of Shar.

How elixirs work[edit | edit source]
- Elixirs can be consumed using a
Bonus Action to grant an effect to a single creature.
- Summoned creatures can also consume elixirs by drinking a potion which (for example) lays on the ground.
- Only some elixirs can be thrown; they are specified in the tables below. When thrown, the effect can be applied to multiple creatures.
- The effect(s) of an elixir last until long rest. The only exception is
Elixir of Universal Resistance, which has the duration of 10 turns.
- Only one elixir can be applied at a time. Drinking another one overwrites the previous elixir, though there are some exceptions:
- The Arcane Acuity from
Elixir of Battlemage's Power lasts for 3 turns after using some other elixir.
- The extra hit points from
Elixir of Bloodlust and
Elixir of Heroism remain after using another elixir.
Potion of Animal Speaking and
Potion of Mind Reading act like elixirs in the sense that they last until long rest. However, they do not overwrite other elixirs or potions.
- The extra spell slot granted by an
Elixir of Arcane Cultivation and its variants
Greater,
Superior and
Supreme remains after drinking another elixir. However, the associated conditions, which increase the maximum of spell slots of the relevant level, are replaced, meaning the slot is still lost if the character has not expended any slots of that level. Drinking one of these elixirs while having the associated condition has no effect, but another elixir (even another level of Arcane Cultivation elixir) removes the condition, after which that of the second elixir takes effect. For example, a 1st level elixir followed by a Greater, then a second 1st level elixir grants two 1st level slots and one 2nd level, provided the character begins with expended slots of both levels.

Unique Elixirs[edit | edit source]
These elixirs cannot be crafted and are not sold by normal merchants. They can only be obtained by giving blood samples to Araj Oblodra, and each party member can only do this once, so the number available is limited. These elixirs do not replace regular elixirs when drunk, nor do they replace elixirs from the blood of different races, meaning several of them can be used simultaneously.

Other[edit | edit source]
The following items are called Elixirs, but function more similary to Potions.
Turn Based Duration[edit | edit source]
Terminology Note[edit | edit source]
In-game, "Potion" is used as a general category of liquid consumables that includes the more specific categories of Potions, Coatings and Elixirs, which are highlighted in tooltips. Only consumables labelled as "elixirs" follow the specific rules mentioned above.
In the tabletop game, "elixir" is just a word used to name particularly powerful potions, and a few potions in Baldur's Gate 3 follow this convention despite functioning as regular potions. These "false elixirs" are included in the Potions page.
Notes[edit | edit source]
- ↑ 1.0 1.1 1.2 1.3 Trade level means here the level requirement for buying the consumable item.
- ↑ 2.0 2.1 2.2 2.3 2.4 This item is not sold by any trader.
- ↑ Elixir of Necrotic Resistance can be bought from Vicar Humbletoes at level 1.
- ↑ 4.0 4.1 The area of effect when throwing the Elixir of Necrotic Resistance or Elixir of Psychic Resistance does not highlight affected characters like it does other resistance potions, but throwing still applies the elixir.
- ↑ Potion of Universal Resistance can only be bought from Skittle or Vicar Humbletoes
- ↑ Despite having "Elixir" in the name, this item behaves like a regular Potion. Its effect lasts only 10 rounds, and does not overwrite other elixirs.
- ↑ 7.0 7.1 At least as of Patch 7, the tooltip for Cloud Giant (but not Hill Giant) Strength says "This elixir can be thrown at at target to apply its effects."
- ↑ Duergar also get this elixir, as they are a dwarven subrace.
- ↑ Drow also get this elixir, as they were once an elven subrace. Drow are generally considered a subrace of elves, specifically known as dark elves, but they have distinct cultural and societal traits which set them apart from other elven subraces. In some contexts, especially in this game and more recent editions of Dungeons & Dragons, they are treated as a separate race due to their unique characteristics and history.
