Involvement[edit | edit source]

Act Two[edit | edit source]

His Majesty can be encountered on the ground floor of the Last Light Inn. He is rather stand-offish and hisses immediately when approached and more throughout any interactions with him. Rangers immediately recognise him as territorial.

Without Speak with Animals:[edit | edit source]

A player character without Speak with Animals Speak with Animals active may try to call the cat to them with a DC 14 Animal Handling check and, at their own peril, attempt to pet him:

  • His Majesty
    *Hiss!*
    • [DARK URGE] MREAOW!
    • [DARK URGE] [ANIMAL HANDLING] Try to muster some kindness, and calm the creature. (DC 14)
    • [ANIMAL HANDLING] Here, kitty kitty. (DC 14)
    • [BARBARIAN] WOOF! Astarion approves +1 Gale disapproves -1 Halsin disapproves -1 Karlach disapproves -1 Lae'zel approves +2 Minthara disapproves -1 Shadowheart disapproves -2 Wyll disapproves -1

While using Speak with Animals:[edit | edit source]

If Speak with Animals Speak with Animals is active, a player character can ask him why they're so angry at them:

  • His Majesty
    Hiss! I say: HISS!
    • Easy, kitty. I mean you no harm.
    • What's got your whiskers in a twist? (if not a Ranger)
    • [INTIMIDATION] Hiss! (DC 14)
    • [RANGER] [ANIMAL HANDLING] I do not seek your territory, noble beast, only a few moments of your time. (DC 10) Astarion approves +1 Gale approves +1 Halsin approves +1 Karlach disapproves -1 Lae'zel disapproves -1 Minthara approves +1 Shadowheart approves +2 Wyll approves +1

The player character can either intimidate him or tell him they mean him no harm. His Majesty then expands further:

  • His Majesty
This is my territory. And you're in it.
    • Apologies. I'll keep my distance.
      • His Majesty
Indeed, you will. Or you'll find my claws planted firmly in your dangles.
    • My intentions are pure. I only wanted to admire you up close. Astarion approves +1 Gale approves +1 Halsin approves +1 Karlach approves +1 Lae'zel disapproves -1 Minthara approves +1 Shadowheart approves +2 Wyll approves +1
    • I see your point.
      • You'll see these points unless you retreat!
    • Barcus is permitted and I'm not? (if Barcus met in Moonrise Towers Prison)
      • Precisely!

The party character can then either apologize, or express that their intentions are pure and that they only wish to admire him, after which he allows the party to stay and chat a little longer:

  • His Majesty
    Hmm.
    • His Majesty
      I'll allow it.
      • Quite the specimen you are. How did you come to this place?
        • I slinked, of course.
      • Quietly admire the cat. Astarion approves +1 Gale approves +1 Halsin approves +1 Karlach approves +1 Lae'zel disapproves -1 Minthara approves +1 Shadowheart approves +2 Wyll approves +1
      • You seem like someone who knows what he's about. Heard anything interesting around here?
        • His Majesty
Good of you to notice. For my part, I have noticed the cleric is a liar.
          • His Majesty
She promised me a bit of milk. But do you see any milk? Do you? Nor do I. Disgraceful.

When asked if he has heard anything interesting, His Majesty relays his belief that Isobel Isobel is a liar because she promised him milk but he has yet to receive any. The party can corroborate this story by finding a milk bowl in Isobel's room. However, stealing it and presenting it to His Majesty does not improve favour with him, nor results in him drinking it.

If the party decides to intimidate him instead and passes the ability check, they can immediately ask a few questions or demand he get out:

  • How did you get to this place?
  • Heard anything interesting around here?
  • What's your name?
  • I could use someone like you in my camp. Care to join?
  • You're in my territory. Get out. Astarion approves +1 Gale disapproves -1 Halsin disapproves -1 Karlach disapproves -1 Lae'zel approves +2 Minthara disapproves -1 Shadowheart disapproves -2 Wyll disapproves -1

Speaking with His Majesty grants the Noble FelineNoble Feline to party members with the NobleNoble background. Meeting Steelclaw Steelclaw as well also grants the Alley CatsAlley Cats inspiration to party members with the UrchinUrchin background.

Appearance changes[edit | edit source]

His Majesty was hairless when he was first implemented in Early Access and through launch. However, Larian gave him the fur of a long-haired cat in Patch #3 on September 22, 2023 with the following patch note:

Updated the visuals of His Majesty, who previously looked like Steelclaw. His Majesty's appearance now befits his name and nature.

This resulted in a massive outcry from players who felt the Sphynx cat breed perfectly fit the character of His Majesty.

Larian restored his appearance soon after in Hotfix #8 on October 3, 2023, deciding to change Steelclaw's appearance instead of His Majesty's:

Shaved His Majesty, who is once again a Sphynx. Steelclaw's eye colour has been adjusted so they are no longer identical twins.
