Mind flayer (windmill), when asked about the wails the party heard

Overview[edit | edit source]

The windmill can be found up the hill at X: 44 Y: -32, north from the Requisitioned Barn and west of the Gur Camp. A blood trail leads to its entrance. When the party first approaches the windmill, they hear noises of distress coming from the cellar.

The windmill door is locked and requires Sleight of Hand checkSleight of Hand check to lockpick. Inside, the millstone chamber is empty, but it has a hatch leading into the basement. Within the basement a sleeping, newly transformedtransformed mind flayermind flayer can be encountered. The note laying on a crate nearby points out that before transforming it was a member of the Flaming Fist by the name of Alyan and a True Soul.

On coming close to it, the EmperorEmperor comments, instigating the player character to take advantage of the creature's weakness and kill it.

The party can then attack the mind flayer or wake it. When awaken, the creature claims it needs a brain to sustain itself, and demands that party provided them with food. Agreeing to do it begins the quest Feed the Mind FlayerFeed the Mind Flayer, which can be resolved by finding a corpse and bringing it to the windmill basement.

Otherwise, the party can tell the creature to take care of its needs itself. Killing and looting it awards the party with the Mind Flayer Brain and Ring of Truthfulness (the latter can also be pickpocketed from it while it is sleeping).

The mind flayer waits inside the windmill basement until the party leaves the area for a Long Rest, then disappears.

Providing the mind flayer with a dead body to feed is considered an oathbreaking action for Paladins of any Oath subclassPaladins of any Oath subclass.
