Notes[edit | edit source]
- A particularly determined player[1] examined the game's database and code; using a variety of tools, they ultimately determined that there are 17412 boxes within the game. This statistic also includes boxes that cannot be interacted with, be it opening, picking up, moving, or destroying. The definition used for "box" encompasses all crates, chests, and barrels, as well as anything that could reasonably be described as such, but excludes other containers.
- Subdivided into their respective container types and analogues, this player determined there are 12568 crates, 1145 chests, and 3699 barrels.[2] This number includes containers that only appear under certain circumstances or after certain conditions are met, and even boxes present in areas only visible during cutscenes.
- Of these, 39% (6808) are interactable, and 61% (10604) are decorative and non-interactable.
- Out of the 10604 decorative boxes, 6% (658) are placed in the world already destroyed.
- There being 6808 interactable boxes is somewhat misleading, as this number counts the amount of boxes visually appearing as part of an interactive element, meaning the actual number of interactive elements is lower, only 6021. For example, the Treasure Crates container behind Ragzlin's throne within the Shattered Sanctum is made up of multiple boxes that are each counted separately as interactable boxes.
- 31% (1893) of all interactive box containers (not visual boxes) may contain Loot, while the remaining 69% (4128) will always be empty. It is possible for a box marked with randomly-generated loot to be empty in a particular playthrough due to Baldur's Gate 3's loot table randomisation. Some boxes are scripted to always have particular loot, while others only contain loot conditionally, depending on specific events or actions.
- 64% (561) of chests, 29% (556) of barrels, and 24% (776) of crates have the potential to contain loot.
