Containers are items that can be interacted with either in the world or from inside a character's inventory to store and retrieve items.

Unless otherwise noted, containers can be picked up, moved and destroyed by most any creature.

Bags and Pouches[edit | edit source]

Lightweight containers, suitable for use in a character's inventory. These are sorted alphabetically when sorting inventory by 'type'.

Chests[edit | edit source]

Chests or chest analogues.

Barrels, Crates and Trunks[edit | edit source]

Barrels, crates and trunks or analogues.

Static Containers[edit | edit source]

Containers primarily used as environmental decoration and cannot be picked up. However, some of these can be moved and / or destroyed.

Other[edit | edit source]

Unusual or unique containers.

Special Containers[edit | edit source]

These are default containers new characters start with and have special properties relating to looting and storage.

Non-Containers[edit | edit source]

These are objects which resemble containers, but do not function as such.

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • A particularly determined player[1] examined the game's database and code. Using a variety of tools, they ultimately determined there are 17412 boxes within the game. This statistic also includes boxes that cannot be interacted with, be it opening, picking up, moving, or destroying. The definition of a "box" used presently encompasses all crates, chests, and barrels, as well as their various analogues.
    • Subdivided into their respective container types and analogues, this player determined there are 12568 crates, 1145 chests, and 3699 barrels.[2]
    • Of these, 6808 are interactable, and 10604 are decorative and non-interactable.
      • Despite there being 6808 interactable boxes, the amount of interactive elements vary drastically due to some elements possibly encompassing multiple boxes. An example of this case includes the Treasure Crates within the Shattered Sanctum, which are made up of multiple boxes that are counted separately.
      • 31% of all boxes may contain Loot, while the remaining 69% will always be empty. It is possible for a box marked with randomly-generated loot to be empty in a particular playthrough due to Baldur's Gate 3's loot table randomization.
      • 64% of chests, 29% of barrels, and 24% of crates have the potential to contain loot, though some of these are scripted to have one or more items of fixed content, conditional content (predicated on one or more of certain events or activities), or none at all.
