Wyll, full name Wyllyam Ravengard, is an Origin character and a recruitable Companion with the Folk Hero background. He is a Human and a Warlock with The Fiend pact first appearing during Act 1.

A valiant hero working in the frontiers of Baldur's Gate, Wyll fights injustice and hunts monsters wherever they may hide. Though bound forever to his infernal patron Mizora, he has dedicated his whole life to protecting the city he loves. Wyll can join the party, and be romanced by characters of any gender.

In multiplayer sessions, if Wyll is chosen as an origin by a player, Karlach will be locked as an option to any other players.

Background

The son of Grand Duke Ulder Ravengard, "the Blade of Frontiers", as he is called, is bound by pact to serve the devil Mizora. Granted fiendish powers by his pactmistress, Wyll must hunt all manner of devils as part of the pact that binds them together. Prepared to sacrifice anything to protect Baldur's Gate, Wyll must struggle to maintain his desire to do good against Mizora's machinations for the opposite.

Starting class

Wyll starts as a Fiend Warlock, giving him a chaotic and destructive set of skills. Wyll's proficiency with rapiers also makes him adept at melee combat, making him a flexible companion that can adapt to any combat roles required.

Special features

  • Wyll has the passive The Blade of Frontiers, granting him proficiency with rapiers regardless of class or background
  • Mizora, Wyll's patron, plays an active part in his story and can be encountered and interacted with. Wyll's choices when dealing with her can lead to positive or negative outcomes.

Personal quest

Wyll's personal quest is The Blade of Frontiers, spanning all acts of the game. Throughout it, Wyll must deal with what it truly means to be a hero, facing the difficulties as he struggles to embody the ideals taught by his father.

Two further quests are available that tie into his personal quest: Hunt the Devil, in which Wyll's vow to slay all fiends will be tested, and The Grand Duke, where Wyll must reckon with the large shadow cast by his father, Ulder Ravengard.

Recruitment

Wyll abandon the party if they side with the goblins to raid the grove. If never recruited and the grove is raided, he will be found among the corpses after the battle.

Act One

Wyll can be recruited in Act One.

  • Wyll is first encountered when approaching the Druid Grove in the Wilderness. On approach, goblins will attack the grove and Wyll will participate in the battle, announcing himself as "the Blade of Frontiers", defending the grove. Afterwards, he can be found in the The Hollow training Tiefling children to fight. If the player speaks with him there and agrees to join forces with him, he will join the party.
  • If the Druid's Grove quest is completed, Wyll cannot be found within the Hollow anymore. He will instead appear after recruiting Karlach and completing the quest at The Risen Road, upon taking a long rest.

Approval

Wyll Approves

Wyll likes acts of heroism, like defending the innocent or defenseless, as well as kind acts towards children. Peaceful, but decisive actions also resonate with him. Those that take a genuine interest in him and his struggles are also well-liked by him.

Wyll dislikes villainous acts and helping evil characters with their plans. Wanton acts of violence are also frowned upon by him, and he disapproves of not lending aid to people in need. He disapproves of any kind of rapport with Mizora, as well.

Romance

Wyll can be romanced by characters of any gender. He is earnest in his romance, and rarely tolerates any type of casual encounters with other characters, especially with Mizora.

Description

Appearance

Wyll has dark brown hair kept in neat rows with cropped sides, a trimmed circle beard adorning his face. His right eye is made out of a sending stone, gifted by Mizora as a replacement after losing his eye fighting cultists, doubling as a method to keep track of him. Despite the scars adorning his face, he retains a youthful face and a friendly, yet determined gaze. He dresses modestly, his outfit suited for combat and hunting with the only thing hinting at his noble upbringing being his rapier.

If transformed into a devil, two great, black horns will sprout from his forehead curving backwards menacingly. His face receives new scars on his cheeks and neck and his good eye will be turned black, with a crimson red pupil.

As he states himself in Act 3, Wyll is 24 years old, having been exiled from Baldur's Gate for the past seven years since his pact with Mizora.

Personality

Heroic and kindhearted, but conflicted and ever struggling against his pactmistress, Wyll has dedicated most of his life to fighting on behalf of the people of the Sword Coast. He takes his duty and title seriously, and speaks boastfully of his skills and past as "the Blade of Frontiers". Despite his determination to his cause, he has a more playful side, suggesting that the party stop to try the drinks at The Waning Moon, and wistfully saying to Karlach that he would love to stop and swim at the beach in Act 3.

He retains some of his noble upbringing, not only in the manner of his speaking, but also in some of the past-times he has such as dancing and reading. Still, while he is able to partake in the pomp and vanity of higher society, he prefers the simple life he leads now.

History

Life in Baldur's Gate

The son of Grand Duke Ulder Ravengard, Wyll observed many of the political inner workings of Baldur's Gate while growing up. His mother died in childbirth, and he spent a largely happy childhood being trained by his father, who came from a working-class background and taught Wyll practical skills, including swordplay. Much of Wyll's principles come from his father, who instilled in him a sense of duty to the city of Baldur's Gate and its people. As his father rose through the ranks of nobility, Wyll took part of many noble gatherings, getting to know that side of the city well.

A pact with the devil

When he was seventeen, Wyll encountered Tiamat cultists in the outskirts of Baldur's Gate, ready to summon the tyrannical dragon goddess to the plane. Eager to stop them, but young and powerless against many armed cultists, Wyll's desperation attracted Mizora who offered him a solution: her powers in exchange of servitude. Wyll didn't hesitate, and together they made quick work of the cult, however, young Ravengard would soon realise the cost of dealing with devils, as one of the many clauses of the pact prevented him from disclosing what happened that night.[note 1]

When his father, Ulder Ravengard, returned from Elturel to find his son accompanied by a devil, he demanded an explanation, yet Wyll's tongue was unable to explain what happened, and the scene of the ordeal was conveniently cleaned up. With cold disappointment, his father cast him out from the city, forever exiled to the frontiers.

Some of the clauses are revealed by Mizora throughout the game:

  • Clause A § 2: 'Should soul-holder choose to abandon his patron, he is freed from his duty. His father, Grand Duke Ulder Ravengard, will be thus fated to die by an enemy's hand.'
  • Clause F § 9: 'Soul-binder shall bestow reward or favour only upon soul-bearer's fulfillment of related obligation.'
  • Clause G § 9: 'Targets shall be limited to the infernal, the demonic, the heartless, and the soulless.'
  • Clause Z § 13: 'Should the promised soul refuse obeyance or neglect duty, the pact-holder shall cast the promised in Avernus as a lemure.'
  • Clause Z § 13: 'If the soul-binder consents to separation, she will release the soul-bearer from all obligation within six months.'
  • Addendum F: 'The Absolute must be avenged for the soul-binder's detention at Moonrise. The soul-bearer retains his gifts until such time as the Absolute is slain.'

The Blade of Frontiers is Wylls's personal quest. It is added to the journal upon recruiting him and spans all three acts of the game.

Act One

At the start of the game, Wyll is on the hunt for Karlach, the latest target his patron Mizora wishes dead. Forced to obey as part of their pact, the hunt takes Wyll to Avernus where he finds his quarry slaying scores of her own. Wyll's relentless pursuit after a fleeing Karlach eventually ends on a rogue Nautiloid, suddenly materialized before them. As they confront each other on the ship, they are captured by Mind Flayers and tadpoled, kept aboard awaiting ceremorphosis.

After the nautiloid crashes, and without trace of his quarry, Wyll eventually finds himself at the Emerald Grove. Moved by the plight of the refugees within, he stays to protect them from goblin attacks. After fending off the goblin scouting party, Wyll can be spoken to in The Hollow. He will recognize the party as being aboard the nautiloid and agrees to join the party in order to find a cure for the tadpoles together. He also reveals that he's on the hunt for a devil escaped from Avernus, and that he knows she's somewhere close.

Karlach can be found near the Toll House, prompting Wyll to confront her. Though Karlach argues innocence, Wyll is determined to slay her until their tadpoles connect and a vision of Karlach's escape from Avernus is shared between the party. The vision shows her tearing through the Archdevil Zariel's forces, frantically seeking escape, a victim of the Blood War, not an agent of it. A choice presents itself: ignore the warnings and help Wyll slay Karlach, or trust her and spare the tiefling. Should Karlach be spared, she can be convinced to join the party, if slain, her head can be taken as proof of Wyll's successful hunt. Sparing Karlach opens the possibility of assisting her in Hunt the Devil, where a group of followers of Zariel are hunting Karlach.

Back at camp, on the next Long Rest, Wyll announces the arrival of his patron, Mizora. She introduces herself to the party, greeting everyone mischievously, and reveals that it was her who gave Wyll his mission to hunt down Karlach. If Karlach was killed, she will be pleased and will reward Wyll. If she was spared, however, she will remind Wyll the terms of their pact and argue that Karlach does indeed fit the description of heartless. Should Wyll insist on not killing the tiefling, Mizora will take it as a breach of the pact, transforming him into a devil as punishment.

If the party reaches Waukeen's Rest, they'll find a burning inn surrounded by Flaming Fists, mercenaries working as Baldur's Gate's enforcers. They'll quickly reveal that Grand Duke Ravengard is trapped inside, and needs to be saved. Wyll quickly moves to help, rescuing Counsellor Florrick, the duke's advisor, in the process but no signs of the duke can be found. Outside and safe, Florrick recognizes Wyll, and urges him to save his father, letting slip that Wyll is the son of the duke. Ambushed by drow, the duke was kidnapped and taken to Moonrise Towers, the base of operations of the Cult of the Absolute.

Act Two

At some point during the adventures in the Shadow-Cursed Lands, Mizora will appear before Wyll and the party, informing Wyll that the absolutists have captured an important asset of Zariel, a powerful devil, and that he must rescue them. Stressing out the importance of the mission, Mizora disappears as quickly as she arrived.

Zariel's asset cannot be found in Moonrise Towers proper, rather, they can only be saved after entering the Mind Flayer Colony after the first battle with Ketheric Thorm. There, the party finds Mizora herself trapped within a pod in the Tadpoling Centre. Mizora can be freed from the pod, or killed, though killing her will also kill Wyll as per the terms of their pact. Should the party free her, she can be persuaded to reward Wyll. Mizora can also be pressed to end Wyll's contract, to which she will relent but not without first stipulating that it will take another six months for the pact to end. Rescuing Mizora lifts Wyll's restriction on speaking about his pact, allowing the party to learn more about his deal with Mizora.

Following Ketheric though the colony, the party eventually finds him arguing with Enver Gortash and Orin the Red, with Duke Ravengard next to them. After the Absolute is revealed to be an Elder Brain under the control of the three Chosen, Orin takes the duke and forces a tadpole into his eye. Gortash and Orin leave for Baldur's Gate not long after, with a now enthralled duke in tow.

Act Three

Arriving at Baldur's Gate, Mizora can be found once more waiting for Wyll and the party in Wyrm's Rock Fortress, provided she was saved from Moonrise. She will mock Ulder Ravengard's fate and goad Wyll into hurrying to the main chamber. When the party returns, Mizora will announce that she is ready to break the pact between her and Wyll, and that she will meet everyone back at the campsite.

After the next long rest, Mizora will appear, ready to bargain. If Duke Ravengard remains alive, Mizora will offer his location, in exchange for a sacrifice. Wyll is then presented with a choice: Break the pact immediately, but sacrifice his father to his fate, or remain forever bound to Mizora in exchange for his father's freedom. Should Duke Ravengard be dead, however, Mizora will present a different bargain: bring back Wyll's father from the dead in exchange for young Ravengard's soul, or break the pact immediately.

Mizora will be pleased with whatever choice Wyll makes, remaining in camp as a camp follower, allowing the party to talk to her and learn more about Wyll's patron. This will also make her available as an ally against the Absolute as part of the quest Gather Your Allies.

Duke Ravengard can be found in the Iron Throne, an underwater fortress used by Gortash and his Banites. The party can attempt to break him out, however, if Wyll sacrificed him in exchange for his freedom, Mizora will appear and attempt to murder the duke, ensuring the deal goes through as pacted between them. If the duke survives, Wyll and his father may have a long overdue reunion, and can then speak to Mizora, who will not be entirely pleased about the outcome but will otherwise not punish Wyll for outfoxing her. Duke Ravengard will then urge Wyll to find Ansur, a legendary dragon said to sleep under the city, ready to defend it during its time of greatest need.

Ansur can be found in the Wyrmway, below the fortress' prison. The legendary Balduran has prepared trials to test the mettle of adventurers before they may seek audience with Ansur. Wyll's upbringing proves valuable during these trials, as he can be consulted for possible solutions to them. With the trials completed, the party may face Ansur, yet all they would find is the decayed corpse of the once-great wyrm. Reanimated, Ansur and the Emperor begin arguing, and it's revealed that the mind flayer is none other than Balduran, turned illithid when he was captured near Moonrise Towers. Angered by Balduran's betrayal, Ansur will attack, forcing the party to put down the wyrm for good.

Ansur's fate can then be revealed to Ulder Ravengard if alive. He will propose Wyll become a Grand Duke of the city, following his father's steps, to which Wyll can agree or decline. Regardless of the choice, duke Ravengard will pledge his support for the coming battle.

Endings

The Blade of Avernus

If Wyll broke his contract with Mizora and rejected the possibility of becoming a duke of Baldur's Gate, he will take the mantle of "the Blade of Avernus" and vow to hunt devils in their own homeland. By the time he is summoned by Withers for his gathering six months after the events of the game, Wyll has become a seasoned slayer of fiends, boasting about his many hunts. He will also mention that he's working with a diabolist from Calimshan to use his sending stone eye to track Mizora, setting his sights on his former patron. If Karlach was convinced to return to Avernus with Wyll, she will have joined him in his hunts.

  1. Wyll's story was almost entirely rewritten for full release after fan feedback. In Early Access, he struggled with a brutal side and with living up to the title of the Blade of Frontiers, and had a particular hatred of goblins. His personality on release was rewritten to be more genuinely heroic and kind-hearted, with his personal struggles focusing more on his relationship with his father and with Mizora, and his hatred of goblins being swapped for a hatred of devils and their kind.
  • Wyll was voiced by Lanre Malaolu during Early Access, but was replaced for unknown reasons.[url 1]
