* The effect of an elixir last until long rest. The only execption is Potion of Universal Resistance, which has the duration of 10 turns.
* Only one elixirs can be applied at a time. Drinking another one will overwrite the previous elixir. There are a couple of exceptions:
** The Arcane Acuity from Elixir of Battlemage's Power lasts for 3 turns after using some other elixir.
** The extra hit points from Elixir of Bloodlust and Elixir of Heroism remain after using som other elixir.
** Potion of Animal Speaking and Potion of Mind Reading acts like elixirs in the sense that they last until long rest. However, they do not overwrite any other elixir of potion.
** If a character consumes some kind of Elixir of Arcane Cultivation, spends the granted spell slot and consumes a similar elixir again, no additional spell slot is granted. If, instead, the second elixir is different (can also be another kind of Elixir of Arcane Cultivation) and then a similar Elixir of Arcane Cultivation as the first one is consumed again, an extra spell slot will be granted.

== Terminology Note == | |||
In-game, "Potion" is used as a general category of liquid consumables that includes the more specific categories of Potions, Coatings and Elixirs, which are highlighted in tooltips. Only consumables labelled as "elixirs" follow the specific rules mentioned above.
In the tabletop game, "elixir" is just a word used to name particularly powerful potions, and a few potions in Baldur's Gate 3 follow this convention despite functioning as regular potions. These "false elixirs" are included in the Potions page.

Similar to Potions, Elixirs are consumable items that can be drunk as a bonus action to apply a variety of beneficial effects. Unlike Potions, the effects of an Elixir last until either taking a long rest or drinking another Elixir. Many Elixirs can be created with Alchemy.
A character can only benefit from the effects of one elixir at a time: drinking an elixir immediately cancels any active effects of a previously drunk elixir.
Other activities can cause elixir benefits to end, including:
- Praying at the Altar to Shar in the Gauntlet of Shar

How elixirs work[edit | edit source]
- Elixirs can be consumed using a
Bonus action to grant an effect to a single creature.
- Summoned creatures can also consume elixirs by drinking a potion which is, for example, on the ground.

Unique Elixirs[edit | edit source]
These elixirs cannot be crafted and are not sold by normal merchants. They can only be obtained by giving blood samples to Araj Oblodra, and each party member can only do this once, so the number available is limited. These elixirs apparently do not replace regular elixirs when drunk, nor do they replace elixirs from the blood of different races. [Needs Verification]
Other[edit | edit source]
The following items are called Elixirs, but function more similary to Potions.
Turn Based Duration[edit | edit source]
Terminology Note[edit | edit source]
In-game, "Potion" is used as a general category of liquid consumables that includes the more specific categories of Potions, Coatings and Elixirs, which are highlighted in tooltips. Only consumables labelled as "elixirs" follow the specific rules mentioned above.
In the tabletop game, "elixir" is just a word used to name particularly powerful potions, and a few potions in Baldur's Gate 3 follow this convention despite functioning as regular potions. These "false elixirs" are included in the Potions page.
