In Case of Death... is a quest given when Gale first dies. A magical projection of Gale appears to warn you "many lives" depend on his return within two days. It would be in your best interest to revive him sooner rather than later.
Warning: On the third Long Rest after Gale dies, there will be a special Game Over.
Objectives[edit | edit source]
Walkthrough[edit | edit source]
If Gale should die for any reason, then you'll see his body start to release Necrotic damage to anyone nearby. After combat ends you'll see a magical projection of Gale pop up and convince you to resurrect him within three days. To do so he tells you a rather elaborate procedure for summoning up a Scroll of True Resurrection he has prepared.
It's not necessary to obtain or use this scroll, as any resurrection method (including Scrolls of Revivify) will satisfy the quest. However, unlike Revivify, the True Resurrection scroll will resurrect any party member with all their hitpoints.
To get the scroll the following steps are to be made:
- Grabbing Gale's Pouch off his corpse
- Pulling the purple thread in a counter clockwise fashion
- Taking the flute and play the notes D-E-A-D
- Addressing the Magma Mephit with "K'ha'ssji'trach'ash" and hand over Gale's letter
Ta-dah! The scroll is there. It can be used to resurrect Gale or for some other occasion. In the latter case Gale must be resurrected by some other way.
The only way to botch the protocol completely is to pulling all the threads in the second step and continuing to do so after a warning; the pouch will disappear and Gale has to be resurrected the old-fashioned way. Other errors will simply allow the party to try again.
Once Gale's back among the living, the party can make an ability check to ask Gale about what just happened:
- [PERCEPTION] I've seen the darkness inside of you, remember? I already know. (DC 10)
- [INSIGHT] You told me you trusted me. Here's your chance to prove it. (DC 8) (if trusted by Gale)
- [PERSUASION] I brought you back to life. A few answers is the least you can spare me. (DC 10)
- [INTIMIDATION] I will have answers or I will put you in the ground myself. (DC 12)
- [BERSERKER] [INTIMIDATION] Speak, or die. Again. (DC 12 )
- [BARBARIAN] [INTIMIDATION] Tell me, or this'll be a very short-lived return. (DC 12 )
If the check is successfully passed, he will answer one question, but will nevertheless remain tight-lipped. Refusing to press him, before or after succeeding the check will grant approval:
- You know what? It's fine. You will tell me when you're ready. +5
- Actually, never mind. If it makes you this uncomfortable, I won't insist. +5
Quest complete.
Reward[edit | edit source]
- Scroll of True Resurrection, if Gale's protocol was followed
