Breaking your Oath[edit | edit source]

Main article: Paladin

The Oathbreaker Knight appears to party members who have broken their oaths, and tells them that he waits at the campsite. Questioning the Oathbreaker about his story and duties reveals he was the first Oathbreaker, who broke his oath, when he disagreed with the cruel ways of his patron, for which he was shamed. Since then, he has guided other Oathbreakers after they failed to fulfill their oaths.

Restoring your Oath[edit | edit source]

If a character breaks their Oath by accident or otherwise wishes to re-dedicate themselves to their Oath, must speak to the Oathbreaker Knight in Camp. He offers to restore the Oath for a fee of 1000gp. This allows the character to once again use their Channel Oath Charge Channel Oath abilities. However, should they break their oath again, the cost to restore the oath increases to 2000gp. If breaking the oath a third time, the price increases to 10000gp. It then stays at 10000gp for each subsequent oath restoration after the third one.

Combat[edit | edit source]

"You're DONE FOR. Hear that? To arms!"
Oathbreaker Knight, when attacked

It is possible to fight the Oathbreaker Knight in the Campsite. Doing so will turn all nearby Camp Followers (including Scratch and the Owlbear Cub) and Companions (who are not in the current party) hostile unless the Oathbreaker Knight is the one who starts combat (which can occur if a party member is caught pickpocketing him).

His body cannot be looted upon defeat, but he will drop a  Greatsword +1, an  Elixir of Heroism, and three  Javelins on the ground when slain, and a Pouch containing a  Plate Armour spawns on his former corpse after a Long Rest.

Withers still refuses to respec an Oathbreaker paladin if the Oathbreaker Knight has been killed. Because the Oathbreaker does not respawn in camp after long rests, this effectively locks any Oathbreaker character out of respec'ing for the rest of the playthrough. Reclaiming an oath, then killing Oathbreaker Knight, then breaking the oath again permanently locks a paladin into a Oath BrokenOath Broken state, as there is no Oathbreaker Knight, who can induct the character into the Oathbreaker subclass.
