Overview[edit | edit source]

Reithwin Town occupies the western part of the Shadow-Cursed Lands, divided both from the Ruined Battlefield and from the Last Light Inn by side streams running south to flow into the River Chionthar. In its western end the Risen Road continues into the road to Baldur's Gate.

The town features two main road directions, east-to-west and north-to-south, crossing unevenly at the central square with a grand statue of Ketheric Thorm Ketheric Thorm in the middle - depictured in the vestments of a Selûnite Selûnite. The town layout has several major buildings, and each of them has its own part in resolving the fate of the Shadow-Cursed Lands.

The potency of the Shadow Curse is stronger in Reithwin Town than on the Ruined Battlefield. The Blessing of Selûne Blessing of Selûne and plain sources of illumination are not sufficient protection from it here. Only a functional  Moonlantern or Dolly Thrice's Dolly Thrice's Pixie Blessing Pixie Blessing keep the curse at bay.

Access[edit | edit source]

Reithwin Town can only be accessed from the Ruined Battlefield via three bridges in various states of preservation:

  • At X: -59 Y: -80 is the main bridge, the widest and most extant one, and leads directly to the Tollhouse entrance.
  • At X: -59 Y: -22 the lesser stone bridge with the destroyed archway and wooden footway laid instead leads to the Mason's Guild.
  • At X: -59 Y: -112 the whole-wooden half-ruined bridge connects a small quay of the Ruined Battlefield with the Tollhouse pier.

History[edit | edit source]

In the distant past Reithwin was a wealthy town, a part of the ancestral domain of the Thorm family. Located on the Risen Road close to the shore of the River Chionthar, it florished, collecting significant tariffs from traffic moving through the river and the Risen Road. Stone-cobbled streets, complex architecture and elaborate stonework adorn the town buildings and are evidence of its prior burgeoning life.

Most part of Reithwin's populace worshipped Selûne Selûne, including the region's governor Ketheric Thorm. His devotion led him to commission a local mason, Morfred Morfred, to construct a grand bastion in Selûne's honour, Moonrise Towers.

However, Kethric's loss of his wife and daughter paved the way for Shar Shar to gain power and influence in the region. Rivalry between the followers of the sister goddesses intensified after Ketheric, grief-stricken from untimely death of his wife Melodia and then his daughter Isobel, renounced the Moonmaiden Moonmaiden. Unable to cope with his loss, Ketheric turned to Shar Shar and set on to systematically eradicate all Selûnite influence from the town, forcing all believers of the Moonmaiden to convert to Shar, flee, or die. Next, he used Reithwin and the underground Sharran temple which was discovered and reenlivened, to muster an army of Shar's elite, the Dark Justiciars, to launch attacks against the Emerald Grove and other nearby areas like Moonhaven village.

Eventually the town, gripped in oppression, drew the attention of the Harpers - a loose organization that roots out villainy. They concluded that Ketheric Thorm had committed "Murder, Slavery, and Desecration of Temples Most Holy." and began to seek a way to end his reign. In doing so they formed an alliance with the druids of the Emerald Enclave. Reithwin soon became the site of a battle between Ketheric's army and the combined forces of the Harpers and druids. Both the city and the stronghold were besieged and, by the time of the game's current events, signs of the intense conflict can still be found on the Ruined Battlefield.

In the end, the Sharran army was defeated, nearly all Dark Justiciars were slain, and Ketheric himself perished. Before his defeat was sealed, he unleashed a Shadow Curse upon the land. Deriving from Shar's Shadow Weave, it sprawled over not only Reithwin town and Moonrise Towers, but covered a vast region around them as well. The land itself ruptured and became distorted: normal flora and fauna perished or succumbed to the curse, changing into blighted thickets and vines or into aggressive undead.

In time, the shadow curse killed all of Reithwin's living inhabitants who did not manage to flee as the curse grew in power, leaving the city as a husk.

City buildings[edit | edit source]

Mason's Guild[edit | edit source]

The north-eastern part of Reithwin Town is taken up by the formidable building of Mason's Guild and its extensive yards, cluttered by blocks of stone and half-chiselled statues and plates. It is separated from the town main by several gates, and its backyard opens onto the bank of the sidestream of the Chionthar. Across it, the shining dome of the protected Last Light Inn can clearly be seen.

After revealing the Selûnite resistance and expositary execution of the guild's head Morfred Morfred the main building, though neglected, was not occupied by any eminent shadow-cursed shadow-cursed creature. Traces of the resistance's activity can still be found in the basement, accessible through the ornate hatch in the farmost room of the guild's building. The quest Investigate the Selûnite ResistanceInvestigate the Selûnite Resistance can be progressed or completed here.

House of Healing[edit | edit source]

The north-western corner of the town is occupied by the health facility, the House of Healing, and its grim satellites: Reithwin Graveyard and the morgue.

The House includes a hospital ward, an annex with a children's ward, and most noticeably, a large operating theatre. It is staffed entirely by undead nurses, and led by the residing surgeon Malus Thorm Malus Thorm. The second floor of the hospital above the operating theatre contains a rich library. Behind the theatre is Malus Thorm's small office. Both the office and the wards have exits into the graveyard.

Exploring the House of Healing is crucial to progress the Lift the Shadow CurseLift the Shadow Curse quest, which in turn is necessary if the party want to recruit Halsin Halsin as a permanent companion.

Graveyard and the Grand Mausoleum[edit | edit source]

Apart from the House of Healing, the graveyard can be accessed through the cast-iron gate, north from the central square and adjacent to the Mason's Guild. In front of these Arabella Arabella can be found, searching for her parents. Several mausoleums with sarcophagi can be looted for various items.

In the far end of the graveyard stands the Thorm Mausoleum, an ancestral burial place for the governor's family. It is also the entrance to the Gauntlet of Shar - an ancient Sharran temple and a crucial location for progressing Shadowheart's Shadowheart's personal quest (both origin and companion). In front of the Mausoleum Raphael Raphael can be encountered, practicing delivery of his lines while he waits to offer the party his own reasonreason to explore the bowels of the temple.

A small patch of land behind and below the graveyard ensconces a dilapidated fisher's hut, where a pack of Cursed Kuo-Toa Cursed Kuo-Toa lays in ambush.

Reithwin Tollhouse[edit | edit source]

The south-eastern corner of the town adjacent to the Ruined Battlefield is occupied by the Reithwin Tollhouse. This two-storied building also has a large basement, which evens the descent of the ground level to the water end. Of all town buildings, this one looks most suffered from the shadow-cursed vines protruding from earth, partly rupturing and entangling its second floor.

On the second floor Gerringothe Thorm Gerringothe Thorm can be encountered, the last acting toll collector, now consumed and deformed by the Shadow Curse. She is accompanied by several floating skulls skulls, each symbolizing a different facet of Gerringothe's depravity. Exploring and looting all rooms of the tollhouse, including Gerringothe's secret office, provides the party with a fair amount of gold and other Valuables.

Sharran Sanctuary[edit | edit source]

On the central square, in the basement of the Ketheric's statue is a hidden Sharran Sanctuary. It can be opened after solving a riddle consisting of several plaques placed on the sides of basement. Inside several tests from Shar Shar herself await; passing them awards the interacting party member with useful buffs until the next long rest, as well as useful loot.

A straight pathway from the central square going south is extended by a stone bridge connecting Reithwin town with the Ketheric Thorm's stronghold, Moonrise Towers. A half-ruined path from the tower docks leads back to the Tollhouse pier.

Also on the central square the fight with Oliver Oliver and his ghost family takes place during the Lift the Shadow CurseLift the Shadow Curse quest.

The Waning Moon[edit | edit source]

The westward direction from the central square lies past the last major building of the town, a distillery named the Waning Moon. It has several entrances both from the city streets and river shore. Inside the bartender Thisobald Thorm Thisobald Thorm waits for a traveller brave enough to try his special brew and share with him some stories about their adventures. He has a small retinue of zombies. Exploring the Waning Moon is key to progressing the quest Punish the WickedPunish the Wicked, which can be started on the Ruined Battlefield.

Road To Baldur's Gate[edit | edit source]

A small stone footbridge to the north-west of the distillery straddles the road leading to a bigger overland bridge. If the party are marked for death by Vlaakith Vlaakith, first approaching it causes a githyanki raiding party led by Tska'an Tska'an to attempt an ambush on the party.[2] Behind the footbridge, throughout the whole Act Two the army of the Absolute is encamped. If the party wander there before defeating Ketheric Thorm, they are arrested and placed into the Moonrise Towers Prison. After the events of the Act Two are concluded, this road sets the party on their way to Baldur's Gate.
