Overview edit

Rainforest's Home is a building in a row of private dwellings and small stores, which runs along Stormshore Street in the Steeps district of Baldur's Gate. It is built side-by-side with The Bibliophile and has two stories and a basement.
The building can be entered both from the facade and from the backside. The front doors at X: -93 Y: -109 are locked and red-outlined. The street is overlooked by a patrol of Flaming Fists and a Steel Watcher. Guards will question the party if they are spotted lockpicking the doors. Using means of Invisibility, spells like Fog Cloud, or entering turn-based mode can be helpful.
Another way to get into the house is through the balcony at the rear side of the building (the balcony railing is broken, which allows party members to jump to it), or the party can try to find their way behind the fence using spells like Fly or Misty Step. The balcony door and the one under it at X: -88 Y: -124 are red-outlined, but not locked.
Rainforest's Home was a dwelling of Alexander Rainforest, an ombudsman at Grey Harbour Docks. By the time the party reach Act Three, Rainforest is already dead.
The house layout edit
Ground-floor and second-floor rooms edit
The corpse of the owner, Alexander Rainforest, lies on the second floor, empty of any loot and without one hand. His severed hand can be taken from the serial killer Dolor during the quest Investigate the Murders.
Alexander's corpse is available for Speak with Dead. Under the spell, it tells that he was an ombudsman at the docks in life, but had been working for some time on an investigation into the peculiar ownership history of Candulhallow's Tombstones. A message from Alexander's friends lying on the cabinet nearby implies that his mates considered Rainforest to be totally obsessed with unveiling the truth about this building.
Through the quest Investigate the Murders, it is revealed that Alexander Rainforest was murdered by Dolor, a cultist of Bhaal, who wants to become an Unholy Assassin of Bhaal.
On the first floor, with a DC 10 Perception check, the party can spot another copy of the Bloodstained Parchment with the list of murder targets, lying conveniently near the basement hatch.
Ratin Sesescor edit

Ratin Sesescor is a buoyant rat who is randomly running around the ground-floor and second-floor rooms within Rainforest's Home. If spoken to through Speak with Animals, they say Alexander had been their "cheese-dropper" until the "man in red" came and caused him to drop "some tasty red morsels" instead of cheese. The Cheese Record book lying on the table next to the bed sheds some light on Ratin's palate. If the player character asks whether Ratin realises that it ate human innards, they cynically mention that Alexander does not need them anymore.
Should the player character continue trying to speak with Ratin, they will shoo them off with a minor threat, saying that the character's own smell is rather delicious and tempts them to taste the character's own "red morsels", even though this would not be very polite.
Rainforest's Basement edit

The hatch under the stairs leads to the basement of Rainforest's Home. Upon descending into the basement, the party may spot a Blast Mine and the Tripwire which sets it off, both requiring DC 15 Perception checks. Further ahead lies a ritual murder scene with a makeshift altar and two blue dragonborn victims. One of them, Winslow Reginol, can be looted of the Clown's Severed Foot and one of Orin's Ritual Notes. On the altar lies a Potion of Feather Fall, a Rope, and a Faded Scroll of Reversal.
The door to the north leads into Rainforest's study, where a Traveller's Chest and a Stack of Scrolls can be looted. A Gilded Chest on the cabinet and another Traveller's Chest near it both contain a small amount of gold and minor random loot as well.
Around the study, several documents regarding Alexander's investigation into Candulhallow's Tombstones can be found, describing suspicious activity around this establishment, including a letter from the Zhentarim agent Roah Moonglow.
The eastern wall of the study, at X: 1424 Y: 1050, is a disguised entrance to the rest of the basement; discovering it requires a DC 15 Perception check.[1] Behind the wall, there is another series of traps (same combination as the basement entrance, same DC to spot). In the far corner of the hidden space, on a stone shelf, stands a Wooden Chest with minor loot. There are also some common weapons around the room. Near the chest lies Rainforest's Chest Key.
A small storeroom to the south is also equipped with the same series of traps as the entrance. It has a Strongbox in the eastern wall that can be opened with the aforementioned key or by succeeding a DC 15 Sleight of Hand check. It contains gold and a random gem.

Notes edit
- Alexander's mailbox contains a copy of the threatening letter addressed to Franc Peartree, another ill-fated victim of the serial killer. This is likely a mistake by the developers.
