Forge of the Nine
The Graveyard is a Location within the Lower City in Act Three of Baldur's Gate 3.
Mum used to say there was no such thing as death. That there was only change.
Dad thought that was a load of woo. That gone meant gone, unless you'd made a deal with one of the gods. Said he had better things to do in life than beg favors off immortals.
Karlach, reciting her parents' views on death

Overview[edit | edit source]

The Lower City Graveyard occupies a large plot of land stretched across the northern part of the Lower City wall. It spans from Candulhallow's Tombstones to the walls of the Devil's Fee.

The graveyard has three open entrances at X: -19 Y: 4, at X: 21 Y: 13 and at X: 56 Y: 31. It features several aisles with plain graves and four entrances to underground family sepulchres:

All mausoleums are locked. The key to Hhune Mausoleum can be found in the Knights of the Shield Hideout, the key to the Ancient Mausoleum can be pickpocketed from Gracie ScyreGracie Scyre, and the key to Durinbold Mausoleum lies on a shelf in the upstairs bedroom of the Mortuary. Finally, the key to Gorion Mausoleum can be picked up from the ground, in the corner to the left of its entrance, hidden by a tuft of grass. Otherwise, each mausoleum door requires DC 10 Sleight of Hand check DC 10 Sleight of Hand check to open. Lockpicking the mausoleums is not considered a crime, although most of them contain traps and / or undead guards.

The middle part of the graveyard is a mild hill, with the Mortuary atop it. It has two stories and a basement. Behind the mortuary is the cemetery carpenter's workbench. Also, a huge weeping willow in the middle of the graveyard is a major landmark, capturing the eye.

Due to the series of murders which recently happened throughout the city, the graveyard staff has plenty of work to cater to the bodies of the newly deceased.

Mortuary[edit | edit source]

The Mortuary building

The Mortuary is located in the eastern part of the graveyard. On its porch, AnitaAnita and Elias FischerElias Fischer are distraught at being unable to get a coffin made for their daughter Lily, her life cut short by a serial killerserial killer. The carpenter Ulkov SullyUlkov Sully is behind the mortuary. He can be convinced to make a coffin for the child out of turn, or paid to do so. Convincing him and reporting back to grieving parents may grant the following inspirations:

Inside the building, the gravekeeper ValmorbaValmorba prepares bodies for burial. If the party read the Tough Letter, carried by GomwickGomwick in Act One, they can ask Valmorba where they can find "M.Kurwin"'s grave, and even ask her to borrow a shovel.

The upper floor of the mortuary serves as Valmorba's dwelling. The only remarkable item there (apart from aforementioned mausoleum key) is her diary.

At X: 31 Y: 21 a locked hatch beside the porch stairs leads to the mortuary's cellar. It can be opened with Kurwin's Mortuary Key carried by Valmorba, or DC 10 Sleight of Hand check DC 10 Sleight of Hand check. Inside are three rooms. In the first are the gravekeeper's notes on Duke Stelmane's bodyDuke Stelmane's body. Straight ahead is the embalmer's lab where a body is waiting to be buried.

The room to the left is Valmorba's workshop. On the table stands the Jar of Mystic Carrion's Lungs, which she bought from an adventurer who found it in the Undercity Ruins. Some herbal alchemical ingredients can be picked up around the room.

Graveyard proper[edit | edit source]

Several potential encounters can be had with persons around the graveyard. Like the Fischer couple, all mourning visitors owe their grief to the serial killer. Several have dialogue lines which change depending on the party's progress with Investigate the MurdersInvestigate the Murders quest.[2]

Mortarch Gracie ScyreGracie Scyre, a cleric of KelemvorKelemvor, is patrolling the graveyard to prevent anyone from digging up the graves. She joins the party in combat if they instigate a fight with either the undead or kobolds (see below). When she reaches the mortuary porch, she stops to speak to the unfortunate couple.

At X: -12 Y: 32 Nina DortmellNina Dortmell is trying to resurrect her recently deceased brother. The party may either help her or convince her to leave him be. Both decisions bring approval or disapproval from various companions, and grant the following inspirations as well:

Helping Nina spawns three ZombieZombies, two Greater ZombieGreater Zombies, two SkeletonSkeletons, and Garret DortmellGarret Dortmell, a Death Shepherd who buffs the other summoned undead with significant additional durability. If the party speak to Mortarch Gracie Scyre after helping Nina, she chastises them for teaching the little girl necromancy, comparing it to leaving a poisoned cake out in a park where a child can eat it. The party can, however, report Nina's attempts to the Mortarch preemptively.

Around X: 3 Y: 23 the Strange Beggar MorbusStrange Beggar Morbus is wandering back and forth, trying to play hide-and-seek with PookumsPookums. She tries to explain to him that a graveyard is not the best place for such games. After the quest Find Mystic Carrion's ServantFind Mystic Carrion's Servant is completed, both Morbus and Pookums disappear from the graveyard. Other visitors, BillyumBillyum and Droona ShveitzDroona Shveitz, are mourning over the fresh graves of their relatives.

Near the western end of the graveyard MaudeMaude sells flowers. Some of her stock can be used for alchemical brewing.

At X: 17 Y: 24 is a grave where a DC 10 Perception check DC 10 Perception check highlights a pipe sticking out of it. If clicked on, a voice can be heard from the pipe. This Dirt Mound is initially red like all other available for digging, but after interacting with the pipe end changes color to normal. Digging up the grave exposes a coffin, and opening it releases Gothric RillynGothric Rillyn, who was apparently buried alive by The Stone LordThe Stone Lord as punishment for theft.

At X: 7 Y: 25 is the grave marked "M. Kurwin". The Dirt Mound in front of it can be dug up to reveal a kobold named BugthimbleBugthimble who aggressively claims the treasures hidden in the grave. The party can then either intimidateintimidate or deceivedeceive Bugthimble to chase him away, while some character Classes (e.g., a Draconic BloodlineDraconic Bloodline Sorcerer), have unique lines to placate him. Failing the check (or choosing the corresponding option) starts a fight with Bugthimble and their kobold allies. If intimidated or defeated, Bugthimble drops the Kurwin's Cauteriser. Dark UrgeDark Urge characters have an additional option to indulge their Urge, burying Bugthimble alive.

After digging up the Dirt Mound at X: 29 Y: 16 a DC 5 Perception check DC 5 Perception check highlights a hole, through which a Small or Tiny creature (or disguiseddisguised or wildshapedwildshaped as such) can descend into the Lower City Sewers, landing near the entrance to Cazador's Dungeon. There appears no option to come back to surface from there.

Several other graves around the graveyard are pictured like red-outlined Dirt Mounds, which still can be dug up, revealing caskets and coffins. From these containers various loot like gold, Valuables, and rare alchemical ingredients can be taken. The sarcophagus under the willow can also be looted if the DC 15 Strength check DC 15 Strength check is passed. However, this all must be done with certain means of concealment. Graverobbing in front of other NPCs is considered a crime and bears adequate consequences.

Throughout the graveyard territory, several herbal alchemical ingredients can be freely taken, including Corpse Rose, Weavemoss, and Poppy Flower, a renamed copy of the Mergrass which can be mixed with it to obtain the usual extract.

Companion interactions[edit | edit source]

There are several companion interactions which take place at the graveyard.

A picture of Karlach and the player character in the lower city graveyard. Their foreheads are touching with their eyes closed, as they share a quiet moment after Karlach visits her parent's graves.

  • If KarlachKarlach is in the party, she points out her parents' graves to the party. They are in the middle aisle of the Graveyard at X: 5 Y: 31. If interacting with any of highlighted tombstones, Karlach speaks to her parents' graves, telling them of what she has been up to. The player character can then ask to find out how Karlach's parents died and events which transpired afterwards.
  • If ShadowheartShadowheart is in the party, she comments on the grave of Allister Marnley, located at X: 25 Y: 15 next to the south entrance of the Graveyard with a "Happy Birthday" note. After this, she can be spoken with again and muses further on newly rediscovered bits of memories from her past in Baldur's gate. It is also possible to place a Night Orchid directly in front of the grave for her. Shadowheart's comment afterwards depends on whether her companion questcompanion quest has been completed, and if it is - on its final outcome as well.
  • The graveyard is also the location where the romantic scene with AstarionAstarion takes place, if he remained a vampire spawn upon completing his companion questcompanion quest, and the player character is currently in partnership with him. To let his past go ultimately, he takes his partner to his own grave, which cannot otherwise be found in a regular playthrough. Judging by other cutscene landmarks, it seems to be located under the willow tree, next to the graves of Karlach's parents.
  • Game dialogue files suggest there was another unique interaction for the Dark UrgeDark Urge origin as well, apparently not implemented. Upon digging up one of the graves, they could have restored a part of their memories and recall that the mutilated corpse buried there is their victim. However, the state of the body would give give rise to mixed feelings with the rest of the party, from utter disgust (Halsin or Wyll) to mild sarcasm (Astarion or Minthara).[3] In current game version, the Dark Urge upon entering the graveyard simply says "Not enough graves. Never enough."
