“My instruments make the most splendid of gifts! I'm sure you'll find something for even the most contrary of bards.„
Overview[edit | edit source]
Chromatic Scale occupies the upper floor of a building in the Steeps district of Baldur's Gate, adjacent to the Facemaker's Boutique and close to the bridge leading into the Upper City through the Baldur's Gate checkpoint.
The building has two stories and a vast basement. The ground floor of it is occupied by the jewelry store The Glitter Gala, run by Omotola. The basement of the building is used as a storehouse by both establishments.
Chromatic Scale is a musical store run by a bard Thomas C. Quirkilious. The name of the shop is a play on words, referencing a type of musical scale as well as the fact that its owner is a Red Dragonborn (and therefore both chromatic and scaled).
Building layout[edit | edit source]

At the counter Thomas C. Quirkilious sells uniquely named musical instruments. These are functionally identical to the common musical instruments available throughout the game, though they cost significantly more.
In his pockets Thomas carries the Quirkilious' Stockroom Key and the key labelled as Omotola's stockroom key. The first key opens the locked wooden chest in a small cubby behind Thomas' counter. This chest requires DC 15 Sleight of Hand Check otherwise and contains gold and alchemical ingredients. The second key opens the hatch lock on the ground floor, behind Omotola's counter.
On Thomas' counter stands a locked gilded chest which requires DC 10 Sleight of Hand Check to lickpick; it contains gold as well as a random gem and Very rare scroll. Several Traveller's chests near the window contain minor random loot, and the numerous display cases around the room are empty.
If the party member speaking with Thomas is a Bard, they can get a decent discount on selling and buying goods by just talking to him about making musical instruments via a class-specific dialogue option. Keeping the conversation up brings as well approval from all possible companions.
Basement[edit | edit source]
The basement hallway is crossed by several tripwires and Vents armed with Cloudkill. The farmost part of the storage area is used by The Glitter Gala.
The first room to the west is a storage area for the Chromatic Scale. Upon entering, a DC 15 Perception Check highlights a piano. Playing on it requires passing another DC 18 Performance Check. Succeeding the second check opens the movable wall across the corridor, where a chest with some common musical instruments stands.
