The Central Watch Tower is a Location within the Lower City in Act Three of Baldur's Gate 3.
Careful where you tread. Wouldn't want you getting stone dust on your clothes.

Overview[edit | edit source]

The tower stands almost in the centre of of the Lower City region. Together with the wall, it divides the city from north to south approximately in the middle. It can be entered through the door at X: -59 Y: -65. Inside the tower the party can go up the winding stair and come out onto the city wall itself. Its also possible to climb the tower belfry instead of going onto the city wall.

The city wall runs from X: -69 Y: -49 to X: -30 Y: -105, to the north and to the south-east from the tower exit. To the south-east, the wall ends with a wreck and is close-built to the side of the Flymm's Cobblers. Going north the wall ends with a tower called Szarr Palace South Tower. This is the only way inside Cazador Szarr's Palace.

On the north-eastern side of the tower at X: -50 Y: -55 is the Lower City Central Wall Waypoint.

Involvement[edit | edit source]

The tower is heavily guarded by the Flaming Fist. Just outside the door are GonfalonGonfalon and SoapstoneSoapstone standing guard. Near their post is a small firing ground, and from the covered tables some plain ranged weapons and six Arrows of Many Targets can be stolen. The central wall is constantly patrolled by Fist EquidnaFist Equidna and Fist HagedorrnFist Hagedorrn. However, there are no Steel WatcherSteel Watchers around assisting the Fists.

On the bell platform of the tower is a chest at X: -56 Y: -62, where the party can find three random arrows from common to Very rare grade. At the far end of the wall at X: -28 Y: -104 is a chest with two random Uncommon or Rare arrows and a Hand Crossbow.

Entrance to Szarr Palace[edit | edit source]

The only way to get inside Szarr Palace is its South Tower: the northern end of the wall butts into it. The tower has two levels; its ground floor does not contain anything remarkable.

The first floor of the tower is guarded by a group of CharmedCharmed guards, accompanied by several Giant RatGiant Rats. Upon climbing the ladder to the first floor, one of them named MeronyMerony initiates a conversation. The party can either convince the guards to let them pass, attack them, or try and remove their CharmedCharmed status via spells like Calm EmotionsCalm Emotions or Greater RestorationGreater Restoration. Alternatively, if AstarionAstarion is in the party and initiates the conversation with Merony, she recognizes him and lets the party pass without any further efforts. If the guards are successfully convinced, the party receive a Key to Ramparts Door, needed to enter the palace from ramparts. The key can also be looted off Merony.

A stairway from the first floor leads up to the top of the tower. There, a wooden chest can be found containing three Potions of Superior Healing and a Potion of Greater Healing.

The guarding post can also be bypassed, as the top of the South Tower has a convenient breach in its crenellation right above the entrance door. Spells like Misty StepMisty Step, Dimension DoorDimension Door or Grant FlightGrant Flight can be helpful here, but this way may also require using a Tactical Camera view to target the point of destination.

Upper Tower[edit | edit source]

From the top of the South Tower, the party can enter the Upper Tower via a double door. Inside the tower on the western side just after entering a locked Traveller's Chest with minor loot inside can be found, unlocked with a Central Wall Chest Key which is carried by ReklanReklan. On a table in the room a book and a Key (Upper Tower) can be found.

Following the stairs up in the Upper Tower, a door can be opened into the ramparts. This is a small outside area which allows the party to enter Szarr Palace in the Upper City. The door into the palace is locked and can be opened with the key taken from Merony.[1] Otherwise, the door requires a DC 15 Sleight of Hand check DC 15 Sleight of Hand check to lockpick.

Outside the Watch Tower[edit | edit source]

There are several NPC vignettes around the Central Watch Tower.

  • Just behind the wall two stonemasons, Paddo GarrardPaddo Garrard and BuntterBuntter are discussing the absence of their coworker Tamris. He did not come to work after the last night, and he is the third one from their crew who disappeared (or, as they speculate, possibly fled the city). Their crew has been tasked with repairing the crumbling part of the wall, and both masons doubt they will manage it.
  • Near the waypoint, two citizen Iza BlouinIza Blouin and Sharlz MolarSharlz Molar are exchanging opinions on the Baldur's Mouth Gazette articles. Both are sceptical about its content. Their banter lines, as well as dialogues with any of them if spoken to, differ depending on the outcome of the Stop the PressesStop the Presses quest.
  • In the archway behind the watch tower MaltaMalta the cat wanders back and forth. If spoken to via Speak with AnimalsSpeak with Animals, he parleys in flourish phrases resembling a speech of a bard or a taleteller. Malta is one of the cats who can be convinced to relieve Derryth Bonecloak'sDerryth Bonecloak's loneliness if her husband BaelenBaelen did not survive in the Underdark in Act One.

Footnotes and References[edit | edit source]

  1. The key to the ramparts is actually needed only if Astarion is currently not in the party for any reason. If he is present, the door into the palace unlocks by itself upon approaching, and Astarion comments on this with irony.
