Template:CompanionTab Wyll, full name Wyllyam Ravengard, is an Origin character and companion in Baldur's Gate 3. He is a human with the Folk Hero background, as well as a warlock with The Fiend pact. His patron is Mizora.[note 1]

If Wyll is chosen as an Origin by one player, Karlach cannot be chosen by any other players, and vice versa.

Background

The son of Grand Duke Ulder Ravengard, the Blade of Frontiers is bound by pact to serve the devil Mizora. Granted eldritch powers by his patron, Wyll is prepared to sacrifice anything to protect his kingdom.[note 2]

Description

Wyll is heroic and kindhearted, dedicating most of his life to fighting on behalf of the people of the Sword Coast. He takes his duty and title seriously, and speaks boastfully of his skills and past as the Blade of Frontiers. He has a more playful side, suggesting that the party stop to try the drinks at The Waning Moon, and wistfully saying to Karlach that he would love to stop and swim at the beach in Act Three.[note 2]

Personal quest

Wyll's Companion Quest is: The Blade of Frontiers

Recruitment

Wyll can be recruited in Act One.

  • Wyll is first encountered when approaching the Druid Grove in the Wilderness. On approach, Goblins will attack the grove and Wyll will participate in the battle, announcing himself as the Blade of Frontiers, and defending the grove. Afterwards, he can be found in the The Hollow training Tiefling children to fight. If the player speaks with him there and agrees to join forces with him, he will join the party.
    • Recruiting Wyll will affect some approvals: Lae'zel disapproves -1 Gale approves +1
  • If you complete the Druid's Grove quest, Wyll cannot be found within The Hollow. He will appear after recruiting Karlach and completing the quest at The Risen Road, upon taking a long rest.

Approval

Wyll likes acts of heroism, like defending the innocent or defenseless.

Wyll dislikes villainous acts and helping villainous characters with their plans.

History

The son of Grand Duke Ulder Ravengard, Wyll observed many of the political inner workings of Baldur's Gate while growing up. His mother died in childbirth, and he spent a largely happy childhood being trained by his father, who came from a working-class background and taught Wyll practical skills, including swordplay.

Bound by pact to serve Mizora, Wyll's dealings with the devil left him estranged from his influential noble family in Baldur's Gate. He left his home and gained fame as The Blade of Frontiers, renowned for his swordsmanship and monster-slaying.

When he was seventeen, Wyll encounted a cult of Tiamat's worshippers, who were on the cusp of summoning the evil dragon goddess to Baldur's Gate. Mizora appeared and offered him a deal that would allow him to stop the ritual, but prevented him from speaking of it, and therefore explaining himself to his father when he returned after the fall of Elturel into Avernus. Wyll's father was furious and turned his back on his son, and Wyll left Baldur's Gate, only returning over the course of the game.

The Blade of Frontiers

At the start of the game, Wyll is on the hunt for Karlach, the latest target his patron Mizora has demanded he kill for her. He must obey, or suffer great consequences. The hunt took to Wyll to Avernus, where he, along with Karlach, was captured and infected with a mind flayer tadpole.

Wyll is incapable of speaking the terms of his deal with Mizora aloud, but when asked, he assures the player that he would make the same choice again, and that he did it for the good of the Sword Coast.

Depending on the player's choices, Wyll may refuse to kill Karlach when he learns that she is not a "heartless devil" as Mizora described, but a good-heated Baldurian tiefling whose heart was literally removed. As punishment, Mizora transforms his body into a devil's, giving him a pair of horns, black eyes, sharp teeth, and mottled skin. Despite the similarities between Wyll's devlish appearance and tieflings, he is specified to have the appearance of a devil, not a tiefling, and tiefling leader Zevlor is said to be alarmed by his appearance.

The terms of the pact

During the course of the story, you can learn some of the clauses of Wyll's pact with Mizora.

Clause F § 9: 'Soul-binder shall bestow reward or favour only upon soul-bearer's fulfillment of related obligation.'

Clause G § 9: 'Targets shall be limited to the infernal, the demonic, the heartless, and the soulless.'

Clause Z § 13: 'Should the promised soul refuse obeyance or neglect duty, the pact-holder shall cast the promised in Avernus as a lemure.'

Clause Z § 13: 'If the soul-binder consents to separation, she will release the soul-bearer from all obligation within six months.'

Addendum F: 'The Absolute must be avenged for the soul-binder's detention at Moonrise. The soul-bearer retains his gifts until such time as the Absolute is slain.'

At the end of Act Two, Mizora lifts Wyll's inability to speak about their pact, allowing Wyll to explain himself to the player as they progress through his story. He will tell the player the entire truth once they save his father from Wyrm's Rock Fortress.

Notes

  • Can be spoken to with Speak with Dead Speak with Dead.
  • In Act Three, Wyll mentions that he was 17 when he made his deal with Mizora, and that he hasn't been back to Baldur's Gate for 7 years, making him 24 years old.
  • When Wyll levels up and the player opens his level up screen, you can hear Mizora laughing in the background

Footnotes

  1. Wyll was voiced by Lanre Malaolu during Early Access, but was replaced for unknown reasons.[url 1]
  2. 2.0 2.1 Wyll's story was almost entirely rewritten for full release after fan feedback. In Early Access, he struggled with a brutal side and with living up to the title of the Blade of Frontiers, and had a particular hatred of goblins. His personality on release was rewritten to be more genuinely heroic and kind-hearted, with his personal struggles focusing more on his relationship with his father and with Mizora, and his hatred of goblins being swapped for a hatred of devils and their kind.
