Wyll Ravengard is an Origin Character and recruitable Companion[1] with the Folk Hero background. He is a Human and a Fiend Warlock first appearing during Act One.
Known as the "Blade of Frontiers" across the marches of Baldur's Gate, Wyll is a valiant hero that fights injustice and hunts monsters wherever they may hide. Though forever bound to his infernal patron Mizora, he has dedicated his whole life to protecting the city he loves. He can be first found in the Emerald Grove (or at camp if Karlach was recruited before him) during Act One, where he can be recruited into the party as well as romanced by characters of any gender.
In multiplayer sessions, if Wyll is chosen as an origin by a player, Karlach will be locked out as an option to other players.
“The frontiers demanded a blade. And so I heeded.„
Overview[edit | edit source]
Background[edit | edit source]
Being the fabled "Blade of Frontiers" and the son of Grand Duke Ulder Ravengard, Wyll is bound by pact to serve the devil Mizora, a cambion in the service of the Archdevil Zariel. Granted fiendish powers by his pactmistress, Wyll must hunt all manner of (typically) malevolent foes she commands [2]. Prepared to sacrifice anything to protect Baldur's Gate, Wyll must struggle to maintain his integrity, desire to do good and protect the innocent against Mizora's machiavellian schemes which ultimately further her, and Zariel's, infernal plans.
Starting class[edit | edit source]
Before he is recruited, Wyll is a level 2 Warlock with the following Ability Scores: STR = 8, DEX = 13, CON = 14, INT = 12, WIS = 10, CH = 15. If recruited, Wyll reverts to a level 1 Warlock with the standard ability scores for that Class. Wyll starts with the Fiend subclass[3], giving him a chaotic and destructive set of skills. His baseline proficiency with Rapiers also makes him a flexible companion who can adapt to any combat roles required.
Special features[edit | edit source]
- Wyll has the passive , granting him proficiency with rapiers regardless of class.
- Mizora, Wyll's patron, plays an active part in his story and can be encountered and interacted with. Wyll's choices when dealing with her (and her instructions) can lead to vastly differnt outcomes that impact his story.
Personal quest[edit | edit source]
Wyll's personal quest is
, spanning all acts of the game. Throughout it, Wyll must deal with what it truly means to be a hero, facing overwhelming odds and, at times, seemingly impossible choices as he struggles to embody the ideals instilled by his father. Two further quests are available that tie into his personal quest:
, in which Wyll's vow to slay all fiends will be tested, and , where Wyll must uphold his honour and reckon with the large shadow cast by his father, Ulder Ravengard.Recruitment[edit | edit source]
Act One[edit | edit source]
Wyll can be first encountered when approaching the Druid Grove in the Wilderness. On approach, Goblins launch an attack on the grove gate and Wyll participates in the battle, announcing himself as "the Blade of Frontiers", as he defends the grove. If Wyll dies during this encounter, he cannot be resurrected or recruited. After the fight is resolved and he survives, he is found in the The Hollow teaching Tiefling children how to fight. If speaking with him there and agreeing to join forces with him, Wyll joins the party.
If Karlach is recruited first, Wyll appears at camp after taking a Long Rest, and immediately confronts her. Convincing him not to attack Karlach gain approvals from nearby companions.
If the Druid's Grove quest is completed, Wyll cannot be found within the Hollow anymore. He instead appears in the camp after recruiting Karlach upon taking a long rest.
Wyll disappears from the game if Karlach dies before meeting him.[Needs Verification]
Wyll does not join the party, if a battle breaks out between the inhabitants of the Emerald Grove before recruiting him.
If raiding the grove without having him recruited, Wyll's corpse can be found among those of the grove defenders after the battle.
Leaving the party[edit | edit source]
He abandons the party if they side with the Goblins and lay waste to the Grove. If he accompanies the party during this siege, he turns on them. If the tieflings and druids are already dead, and the party directed Minthara towards the Grove, he abandons the party once the goblin celebration commences.
Approval[edit | edit source]
Wyll approves of valiant acts of defending the innocent or the defenceless, and appreciates kindness towards children. Peaceful, but decisive actions resonate with him. Those who take a genuine interest in him and the struggles he faces are also appreciated.
Wyll dislikes villainous acts and condemns participation in evil plans. He frowns upon wanton violence and disapproves of refusing or abandoning those in need. He is hostile to his infernal patron Mizora and disapproves of any kind of rapport with her.
Romance[edit | edit source]
Wyll can be romanced by characters of any gender. He is earnest in his romance, and takes a dim view of casual encounters with others, especially Mizora.
Description[edit | edit source]
Appearance[edit | edit source]
Wyll has dark brown hair kept in neat rows with cropped sides, a trimmed circle beard adorning his face. He claims his right eye is made out of Bloodstone carved from the Galena Mountains, which functions as a sending stone, gifted by Mizora as a replacement after losing his eye fighting cultists, doubling as a method to keep track of him.[4] Despite the scars adorning his face, he retains a youthful face and a friendly, yet determined gaze. He dresses modestly, his outfit suited for combat and hunting, with the only thing hinting at his noble upbringing being his rapier.
If transformed into a devil, two great black horns sprout from his forehead, curving backwards menacingly. His face receives new scars on his cheeks and neck and his good eye will be turned black, with a crimson red pupil.
In Act 3, Wyll reveals he is 24 years old,[5] having been exiled from Baldur's Gate for the past seven years since his pact with Mizora.
Personality[edit | edit source]
Heroic and kindhearted, but conflicted and ever struggling against his pactmistress, Wyll has dedicated most of his life to fighting on behalf of the people of the Sword Coast. He takes his duty and title seriously, and speaks boastfully of his skills and past as "the Blade of Frontiers". Despite his determination to his cause, Wyll has a more playful side. He suggests the party stop to try drinks at The Waning Moon, and wistfully says to Karlach he would love to unwind and swim at the beach in Act 3.
He retains some of his noble upbringing, not only in the manner of his speaking, but also in some pastimes he has, such as dancing and a fondness for good wine.[6] Still, while he is able to partake in the pomp and vanity of higher society, he prefers the simple life he leads now.[7]
History[edit | edit source]
Life in Baldur's Gate[edit | edit source]
The son of Grand Duke Ulder Ravengard, Wyll observed many of the political inner workings of Baldur's Gate while growing up. His mother, Francesca,[8] died in childbirth,[9] and he spent a largely happy childhood being trained by his father, who came from a working-class background, being taught practical skills such as swordplay.[10] Much of Wyll's principles come from his father, who instilled in him a sense of duty to the city of Baldur's Gate and its people. As his father rose through the ranks of nobility, Wyll took part of many noble gatherings, getting to know that side of the city well.
A pact with the devil[edit | edit source]
When he was seventeen, Wyll felt a grave warning urging him to investigate the outskirts of the city, where he encountered Tiamat cultists ready to summon the tyrannical dragon goddess to the plane. Eager to stop them, but young and powerless against many armed cultists, Wyll's desperation attracted Mizora who offered him a solution: her powers in exchange for his eternal servitude. Wyll did not hesitate, and together they made quick work of the cult,[11] however, young Ravengard would soon realize the cost of dealing with devils, as one of the many clauses of the pact prevented him from disclosing what happened that night.[12][13] Though Mizora never gave specifics for why she approached Wyll, all she revealed was that Tiamat's scheme was at odds with Zariel's plans.[14]
When his father, Ulder Ravengard, returned from Elturel to find his son accompanied by a devil, he demanded an explanation, yet Wyll's tongue was unable to explain what happened, and the scene of the ordeal was conveniently cleaned up. With cold disappointment, his father cast him out from the city, forever exiled to the frontiers.[15]
Ever since, Wyll has roamed the frontiers beyond Baldur's Gate, struggling to serve the city, protect the weak and fight for justice, as he carries out Mizora's infernal whims.
Some of the clauses are revealed by Mizora throughout the game:
- Clause A § 2: 'Should soul-holder choose to abandon his patron, he is freed from his duty. His father, Grand Duke Ulder Ravengard, will be thus fated to die by an enemy's hand.'
- Clause F § 9: 'Soul-binder shall bestow reward or favour only upon soul-bearer's fulfilment of related obligation.'
- Clause G § 9: 'Targets shall be limited to the infernal, the demonic, the heartless, and the soulless.'
- Clause Z § 13: 'Should the promised soul refuse obeyance or neglect duty, the pact-holder shall cast the promised in Avernus as a lemure.'
- Clause Z § 13: 'If the soul-binder consents to separation, she will release the soul-bearer from all obligation within six months.'
- Addendum F: 'The Absolute must be avenged for the soul-binder's detention at Moonrise. The soul-bearer retains his gifts until such time as the Absolute is slain.'
Involvement[edit | edit source]
The Blade of Frontiers is Wyll's personal quest. It is added to the journal upon recruiting him, and it spans all three acts of the game.
Act One[edit | edit source]
At the start of the game, Wyll is on the hunt for Karlach, the latest target his patron Mizora wishes dead. Forced to obey as part of their pact, the hunt takes Wyll to Avernus, where he finds his quarry slaying scores of her own. Wyll's relentless pursuit after the fleeing Karlach eventually ends on a rogue Nautiloid, suddenly materialised before them. As they confront each other on the ship, they are captured by Mind Flayers and tadpoled, kept aboard awaiting Ceremorphosis.
After the Nautiloid crashes, and without trace of his quarry, Wyll eventually finds himself at the Emerald Grove. Moved by the plight of the refugees within, he stays to protect them from Goblin attacks. After fending off the goblin scouting party, Wyll can be spoken to in The Hollow. He recognizes the party as having been aboard the nautiloid. Depending on conversation choices made by the player character, Wyll agrees to join the party to hunt a devil (Karlach) or find a cure for the tadpoles together. If joining to find a cure for the tadpoles, Wyll then reveals he is on the hunt for a devil escaped from Avernus, and he knows she is somewhere nearby.
Karlach can be found near the Toll House. If in the party, Wyll confront her immediately. As Karlach defends her innocence, Wyll remains determined to slay her until their tadpoles connect and a vision of Karlach's escape from Avernus is shared between the party members. The vision shows her tearing through the Archdevil Zariel's forces, frantically seeking escape. She is a victim of the Blood War, not an agent of it. A choice is presented: ignore the warnings and help Wyll slay Karlach, or trust the events shared by her tadpole and spare the Tiefling. If spared, Karlach may be recruited and (if space is available) added to the active party. If slain, Karlach's head can be taken as proof of Wyll's successful hunt. Sparing Karlach opens the possibility of assisting in her to slay false paladins of Tyr who are hunting her down.
If not in the active party roster when Karlach is recruited, Wyll confronts her at the next long rest. The player character may choose to have the party fight either of them or diffuse the situation. If conflict is avoided, the player character gains approval with all nearby companions and, if spoken with after, Wyll alludes to unpleasant consequences from his decision to spare Karlach being revealed "one night soon".
At camp, on the next Long Rest, Wyll warily announces the arrival of Mizora. She introduces herself to the party, greets everyone mischievously and reveals not only her role as Wyll's patron but that it was she who gave Wyll his mission to hunt Karlach. If Karlach was killed, she is pleased and rewards Wyll. If spared, however, Mizora reminds Wyll of the terms of their pact and his obligation to hunt the heartless, a description Karlach clearly meets. If insisting she remain spared, Mizora takes his refusal as a breach of the pact, and transforms him into a fiend as a consequence. The same result occurs if the party avoids Wyll's mission and ignores Karlach entirely. However, if one is determined to do so, it is possible to have both Karlach and Wyll in the party together and evade Mizrora's punishment.[Needs Verification][16]
If the party reaches Waukeen's Rest, they find a burning inn surrounded by Flaming Fists, mercenaries working as Baldur's Gate's enforcers. They quickly reveal Grand Duke Ravengard is trapped inside, and needs to be saved. Wyll quickly moves to help, rescuing Counsellor Florrick, the duke's advisor, in the process, but no signs of the duke can be found. Outside and safe, Florrick recognises Wyll and urges him to save his father, letting slip that Wyll is the son of the duke. Ambushed by Drow, the duke was kidnapped and taken to Moonrise Towers, the base of operations of the Cult of the Absolute.
Act Two[edit | edit source]
At some point during the adventures in the Shadow-Cursed Lands, Mizora appears before Wyll and the party, informing Wyll that the Absolutists have captured an important asset of Zariel, a powerful devil, and that he must rescue them. Stressing out the importance of the mission, Mizora disappears as quickly as she arrived. During this conversation the Player Character may pass a series of skill checks to allow Wyll the opportunity to earn his freedom from his pact with Mizora if he completes the mission. Afterwards, if successful in creating this chance, a conversation icon [!] appears above Wyll's head, and further approval may be gained.
Zariel's asset cannot be found in Moonrise Towers proper, rather, they can only be saved upon entering the Mind Flayer Colony after the first battle with Ketheric Thorm. There, the party finds Mizora herself trapped within a pod in the Tadpoling Centre. Mizora can be freed from the pod, or killed, though killing her also kills Wyll as per the terms of their pact. If freed, she can be persuaded to reward Wyll. If not accomplished earlier, Mizora may also be pressed here to end Wyll's contract, to which she may relent yet stipulate it will take another six months for the pact to end. Rescuing Mizora lifts Wyll's restriction on speaking about his pact and allows the party to learn more about his deal with her.
Following Ketheric through the colony, the party eventually finds him arguing with Enver Gortash and Orin the Red, with Duke Ravengard next to them. After the Absolute is revealed to be an Elder Brain under the control of the three Chosen, Orin takes the duke and forces a tadpole into his eye. Gortash and Orin leave for Baldur's Gate not long after, with a now enthralled duke in tow.
Act Three[edit | edit source]
Arriving at Baldur's Gate and provided she was rescued from Moonrise, Mizora is found once more waiting for Wyll and the party on the main floor of the Wyrm's Rock Fortress. She mocks Ulder Ravengard's fate and goads Wyll into hurrying to the main chamber. When the party returns, Mizora announces she is ready to break the pact between her and Wyll, and will meet everyone back at the campsite.
After the next long rest, Mizora appears, ready to bargain. If Duke Ravengard remains alive, Mizora offers his location in exchange for a sacrifice. Wyll is then presented with a choice: break the pact immediately, but sacrifice his father to his fate, or remain forever bound to Mizora in exchange for his father's freedom. If Duke Ravengard did not survive, however, Mizora presents a different bargain: bring back Wyll's father from the dead in exchange for young Ravengard's soul, or break the pact immediately.
Mizora is pleased with whatever choice Wyll makes, remaining in camp as a Camp Follower. She then allows the party to speak with and learn more about her. This also makes her available as an ally against the Absolute as part of the quest .
If alive, Duke Ravengard is later found in the Iron Throne, an underwater fortress used by Gortash and his Banites. The party may attempt to break him out. However, if Wyll sacrificed him in exchange for his freedom, Mizora will appear and attempt to murder the duke, ensuring the deal goes through as pacted between them. If the duke survives, Wyll and his father have a long overdue reunion, and can speak to Mizora, who is displeased at the outcome but does not otherwise not punish Wyll for outfoxing her. Duke Ravengard then urged Wyll to find Ansur, a legendary dragon said to sleep under the city, ready to defend it during its time of greatest need.
Ansur is found in the Wyrmway, below the fortress' prison. The legendary Balduran has prepared trials to test the mettle of adventurers before they may seek audience with Ansur. Wyll's upbringing proves valuable during these trials, and he can be consulted for possible solutions to them. With the trials completed, the party faces Ansur, yet all they find is the decayed corpse of the once-great wyrm. Reanimated, Ansur and the Emperor begin arguing, and it is revealed the mind flayer is none other than Balduran, turned illithid when he was captured near Moonrise Towers. Angered by Balduran's betrayal, Ansur attacks, forcing the party to put down the wyrm for good.
Ansur's fate can then be revealed to Ulder Ravengard, if alive. He propose Wyll become a Grand Duke of the city, following his father's steps, to which Wyll may agree or decline. Regardless of the choice, duke Ravengard pledges his support for the coming battle.
Endings[edit | edit source]
The Blade of Avernus[edit | edit source]
If transformed by Mizora and Wyll chooses not to become the Grand Duke of Baldur's Gate, he takes on the mantle of "the Blade of Avernus" and vows to hunt devils in their own homeland. By the time he is summoned by Withers for his gathering six months after the events of the game, Wyll has become a seasoned slayer of fiends, boasting about his many hunts. If his contract was broken, he also mentions he is working with a diabolist from Calimshan and is using his sending stone eye to track Mizora, setting his sights on his former patron. If still bound to his patron, he mentions that she has been surprisingly hands-off, sending him only after demons and devils per their agreement. If Karlach is convinced to return to Avernus with Wyll, they join efforts to find a cure for her mechanical heart and will grow closer after travelling together for six months there. [17]
Grand Duke of Baldur's Gate[edit | edit source]
If choosing to become the Grand Duke of Baldur's Gate, Wyll oversees the reconstruction of the city, parleys with influential nobles for aid and tightens bonds with the other cities of the Sword Coast. If Ulder Ravengard lives, Wyll works with him to marshal forces for peace and renewal. The city's gates are opened to refugees, the Council of Four is reformed, and romanced player characters are extended an invitation to become a Duke. If Wyll never brakes his contract with Mizora, she remains active in his life in her human disguise, enjoying the political intrigue and keeping him on a long leash for reasons unknown to him.
The Blade of Frontiers[edit | edit source]
If Wyll either never completed his personal quest or was not transformed by Mizora and chose not to become the Grand Duke of Baldur's gate, he remains "the Blade of Frontiers" and wishes to share stories of his adventures. He shares that he has slain trolls, ghouls, a dinosaur, a lich, and a dragon. If his contract was broken, he also mentions he is working with a diabolist from Calimshan to use his sending stone eye to track Mizora, and has set his sights on his former patron.
Quest rewards[edit | edit source]
- Infernal Rapier — granted by Mizora for rescuing her from the Mind Flayer Colony in Act 2 and convincing her with a successful DC 14 Persuasion check
- Infernal Robe — granted by Mizora for killing Karlach
