Basilisk Gate Barracks is a Location within the Lower City in Act Three of Baldur's Gate 3.
I have a city to protect, refugees to manage, and an army on my door - I do not have time to chat.
Liara Portyr, commander of the Basilisk Gate checkpoint

Overview[edit | edit source]

Basilisk Gate Barracks are situated just north of the Basilisk GateBasilisk Gate - the point of first entrance to the Lower City, and the point of changing regions between the Lower City and Wyrm's Rock Fortress after that.

The barracks are tucked into the city wall corner, but the wide open ground across it can also be designated as their part, as it is used as a place of executions, featuring a large gallows in the middle.

The Basilisk Gate Barracks consists of of the Flaming Fist office with adjacent dormitory and kitchen, the open training ground, and the Heapside Prison located in its basement. A small unnamed bath-house nearby could be considered a part of the complex as well.

The barracks are built higher than the average street level, probably to make room for the prison, and thus are reached by climbing up the stone stairs. Also, a wooden stairs outside the barracks wall ends with a side door which opens onto the training grounds.

On the wall near the barracks' entrance is the Basilisk Gate Waypoint at X: 134 Y: -38.

Barracks layout[edit | edit source]

Training grounds[edit | edit source]

Inner court of the barracks

This is an open space divided from the rest of the city by a stone wall with wooden ramparts atop it. The space around the training area itself is used as a storage. To the east is the entrance to the barracks' office. The place is guarded by several Flaming Fists and a Steel WatcherSteel Watcher. Also, any citizens who come to state their concerns wait their turn to do it here.

Near the entrance, Fist MurphyFist Murphy is standing on one leg, being punished in such a way for a felony by the barracks' commander Blaze PortyrBlaze Portyr. Fist CloverFist Clover, who is patrolling the ramparts, checks on him when passes by, expressing mild compassion. A key, if pickpocketed from her, opens the wooden chest standing in the far end of the ramparts. It keeps several random Uncommon arrows and a bow.

In the training area Fist KoltzFist Koltz and Fist CrosseFist Crosse are training hard under the watchful eyes of Gauntlet ThunderGauntlet Thunder. Both receive the ExhaustedExhausted condition from time to time.

Fist EostreFist Eostre wanders around, charged with counting the supplies and reorganizing them. Several petitioners are waiting to be heard out by the Fist officers. Fist MillerFist Miller guards the office door and does not stop the party from entering the office. He can be pickpocketed for the Heapside Armoury Key.

Interacting with most NPCs here and choosing certain dialogue options can bring small amounts of approval from various companions.

The bath-house with its entrance at X: 123 Y: 4 is a part of Find Dribbles the ClownFind Dribbles the Clown quest: it is one of the murderous effigies left by Orin the Red in the city. The door is locked; it requires DC 10 Sleight of Hand check DC 10 Sleight of Hand check [1] Inside the decapitated body of Gohumberry TrespGohumberry Tresp can be found.

Barracks office[edit | edit source]

The barracks inside consist of several rooms: an office, a small dormitory, and a kitchen where Cook KamerosCook Kameros is toiling.

Upon first visiting the office the party see Blaze Portyr, accompanied by Manip SeyamaManip Seyama. A woman named LoraLora tries to get through to the commander to get help with finding her missing daughter. Blaze Portyr, however, behaves herself strangely, speaking off the mark, and a passive DC 15 Arcana check DC 15 Arcana check allows the observer to detect her being enchanted. Offering Lora help starts the quest Save VanraSave Vanra.

The door to dormitories is red-outlined, but inside there is nothing significant to explore or loot. Blaze Portyr can be pickpocketed for the Office Storage Key.

The door in the northern wall leads down to the Heapside Prison.

Heapside Prison[edit | edit source]

Heapside Prison cells area

The Heapside Prison is a small (compared to the one in Wyrm's Rock) lockup in the Basilisk Gate Barracks Basement. A letter addressed to Seyama suggests that it is used mainly for a brief imprisonment of alleged criminals before execution. However, should a party member get caught committing a crime by the Flaming Fist within the Lower City and agree to be arrested, the character in question is transported to a cell within Heapside Prison.[2]

The prison consists of a cells area with a guardroom, and a small office with adjacent armoury. It is guarded by three Flaming Fists and a Steel Watcher, all of which move around the prison in a certain sequence.

The guardroom here has a manhole and a pit latrine. Both, if used, transport the party member to the Lower City Sewers and back.[3]

The prison cell where an arrested character is placed provides several options for a break-out. It has a breakable wall section and a hole (requires DC 5 Perception check DC 5 Perception check to notice), both leading into the guardroom. Also, a breakable barricade behind some crates allow them to move to the neighbouring cell, where Fist SmithwynnFist Smithwynn stands guard. The key he keeps in his pocket opens both cells' doors.

Inside the prison cell SkittleSkittle the rat trader runs around. If spoken via Speak with AnimalsSpeak with Animals, he acts as a trader. Among other goods, he sells Counting House Safe nº2 Key. Skittle speaks in rat-themed puns, and the interacting character can keep the conversation in the same style, earning approval from some companions. If the party come to explore the prison from the barracks, Skittle still can be spoken with through the cell grate.

The wooden trunk at X: -1280 Y: 765 contains gold, a random gem, random scrolls and three Trap Disarm Toolkit sets - possibly confiscated from a prior prisoner. Another wooden trunk nearby holds two sets of Thieves' Tools. Both containers are red-outlined and guarded by Fist ArrinyeFist Arrinye.

The prison office door is also red-outlined, and any attempt to enter it without means of concealment is stopped by the guards. Inside are two heavy chests containing random arrows and scrolls from Uncommon to Very rare grade. The larger can be opened with DC 18 Sleight of Hand check DC 18 Sleight of Hand check, the smaller with DC 20 Sleight of Hand check DC 20 Sleight of Hand check. Otherwise, both can be opened with the Office Storage Key, pickpocketed from Liara Portyr. The smaller chest also contains an old, partly censored Crumbling File concerning the Emperor'sEmperor's activity in the city.

Fist CorlosFist Corlos can be pickpocketed for the Barracks Office Key, which opens the outer door to the prison armoury. A copy of this key lies in the cabinet at X: -1286 Y: 782, but the door leading into it from the office itself is unlocked. The armoury has another unlocked heavy chest behind the iron gate, which can be opened with the Heapside Armoury Key or with a DC 15 Sleight of Hand check DC 15 Sleight of Hand check. Inside are several health potions of various grades. The weapon stands here keep several uncommon +1 weapons.

Office desks contain documents concerning the criminal situation in the city, including Counsellor Florrick'sCounsellor Florrick's death sentence signed by the tadpoled Duke RavengardDuke Ravengard. However, even if the Free Counsellor FlorrickFree Counsellor Florrick quest is in progress, reading this document does not progress it.

Execution grounds[edit | edit source]

The focal point of this open space is a large gallows guarded by the executioner Fist 'Edge' ArensenFist 'Edge' Arensen. Talking to him reveals the biased authorities' view on the crime and punishment in the city, and may earn a small amount of approval from party members.

If the Free Counsellor FlorrickFree Counsellor Florrick quest has not been started yet, reading the Execution Notice pinned to the gallows' platform starts it. If the quest is already in progress, Arensen can let slip some information on her whereabouts. If Florrick is not saved during the quest, her body remains on the gallows for several Long Rests, guarded by extra Fists, AndersonAnderson and WilliamsWilliams.[4] Also, from time to time the bodies of other executed people appear hanging in the nooses. Several pillories near the waypoint, seemingly an alternative detention for culprits, are always empty.

Near the gallows Estra StirEstra Stir, a reporter of Baldur's Mouth Gazette, can start the quest Stop the PressesStop the Presses. It is a time-sensitive quest which has the length of a single Long Rest. Its outcome directly influences the attitude of the various citizens towards the party throughout the Lower City, and also can affect the prices of certain traders around it.

There are also several minor NPC vignettes around Basilisk Gate Barracks.

  • Near the gate Fist KuthbertFist Kuthbert declares the new order on all the citizens' livestock to be turned over into the authorities' hands. Several citizen are protesting against it, but Kuthbert, who guards the cages with already confiscated animals, pays them with trivialities.
  • Behind the gallows three dwarves - Hasmet HuddHasmet Hudd, Giftu HuddGiftu Hudd and Dryfle DoonDryfle Doon are discussing their plans after they have finally reached the Lower City. They celebrate being in security from the marching armies at last.
