Astarion/Approval

Template:CompanionTab Astarion likes displays of power and cruelty, and appreciates snarkiness and mocking. He is inspired when the player gains access to areas/information by deceiving others. The player does not have to be "evil" to gain his approval, however — he approves when the player makes choices that support independence and autonomy, and when the player helps certain characters in need.

Astarion dislikes displays of weakness and does not like acts of kindness or charity that offer no reward. He disapproves when the player tries to rein him in or restrict him in some way.

The actions and choices listed on this page will raise or lower Astarion's Approval.

Greetings

Depending on his approval rating, Astarion may greet the player with:

Negative (<0):

  • “You again.”
  • "What do you need now?"
  • "You're staring at me again. What do you want?"

Neutral (0 - 29):

  • "Well, hello. What can I do for you?"
  • “Yes?"
  • “Need Something?”

Medium and up (30+):

  • "Ah, my favourite travelling companion."
  • "Hello, my dear."
  • "What can I do for you, my friend?"

When spoken to by someone other than the player character:

  • "Sorry, darling, I haven't got time for underlings. If your boss wants to speak with me, I'm all pointy ears."

Romance

Flirting:

  • "It's always a pleasure to see you sauntering over."
  • "Yes, darling?"
  • "Hello, beautiful."
  • "I did miss that face, you know."
  • "Hello, my sweet."
  • "Hello, lover."
  • "Yes darling, do you need something?"
  • "Need something? Or did you just miss me?"

Partnered:

  • "Gods, you're beautiful."
  • "Is there something you want to talk about, my dear?"

Broken up:

  • "Why in the hells are you bothering me now?"

After completing The Pale Elf

Dark Urge exclusive

Astarion also has some greetings exclusive to the Dark Urge origin. He will only say these once:

  • "You have a manner of irresistible desperation about you. I like it." (first meeting)
  • "My sweet, conflicted villain. What can I do for you?" (after killing Isobel)
  • "Come to kill me again, darling?" (when romanced, if the player fully refrained from killing him after failing to kill Isobel)
  • "My dagger-happy friend. What troubles you?" (after killing Alfira)
  • "Precious little Bhaal-Babe!" (after the player discovers the truth about their parentage in Act 3)

Approval

The following story and dialogue choices will cause Astarion to gain approval.

Act One

Roadside Cliffs

  • Attack the Tieflings holding Lae'zel in a cage after initiating dialogue. Astarion approves +1
  • Ask Lae'zel to say 'please' after rescuing her. Astarion approves +1
  • Attack Gimblebock and the gang near the ruins. Astarion approves +1

Emerald Grove/The Hollow

  • Refuse to help Zevlor with persuading druids to let the tieflings stay. Astarion approves +2
  • Scold Elegis for being scared of a few goblins OR tell her to get to digging their own graves. Astarion approves +1
  • While speaking with Arron, say the refugees will be fine due to their devilish powers. Astarion approves +1
  • Tell the tielfling kids trained by Asharak that they are going to die. Astarion approves +1
  • Make Zorru bow to Lae'zel. Astarion approves +1
    • After Lae'zel has questioned Zorru, tell her she is good at interrogations. Astarion approves +1
  • Offer to heal Pandirna for a price but pocket the money and leave. Astarion approves +1
    • Playing as The Dark Urge, break Pandirna's legs and kill her. Astarion approves +1
    • Playing as a non-Barbarian character, tell Pandirna to hush or you will snap her neck. Astarion approves +1
  • Let Arka shoot Sazza. Astarion approves +1
  • Tell Auntie Ethel about the tadpole in your head. Astarion approves +1
  • While talking to/trading with Mattis, mimic his trick and then either pocket the ring straightaway OR tell him you've earned it. Astarion approves +1
  • Threaten Mol when first meeting her in the Tiefling Hideout. Astarion approves +1
  • After successfully stealing the Idol of Silvanus for Mol, tell her that you will keep it for yourself
    • OR Playing as a Rogue, tell her to stop bargaining about the idol Astarion approves +1

After resolving Arabella's fate

  • Tell Kagha that you would have killed Arabella outright. Astarion approves +1
    • OR Tell her you just wanted to see what would happen. Astarion approves +1
    • OR Tell her that it was quite a show. Astarion approves +1
    • OR Attack her. Astarion approves +1
  • If Arabella has died, lie to Locke and Komira that Kagha will release her soon. Astarion approves +1
  • When confronting Kagha about the Shadow Druids, choose to attack her instead of persuading her. Astarion approves +1
    • OR If tried to persuade Kagha to fight against Shadow Druids and failed, attack her. Astarion approves +1
  • Prod Nettie's bird twice. Astarion approves +1
  • Attack Nettie (no need to kill her) Astarion approves +5
  • Playing as a Bard, talk to the squirrels listening to Alfira and first hush them not to ruin the song, and only afterwards the class-unique line "Sing along…" Astarion approves +1
  • Take Alfira's lute out of her hands and smash it Astarion approves +1
  • Tell Alfira she should give up on her song Astarion approves +1
  • Playing as a Rogue, pick Mirkon's pockets while he is charmed by the harpies. Astarion approves +1
  • After saving Mirkon, tell him to "stop snivelling or they'll be back". Astarion approves +1
  • While using Speak with Animals convince Topaz the bird that the key in its nest is dull, choose the bard-specific option about a song, kick the bird or tell Topaz that the metal's bad quality as a Dwarf. Astarion approves +1
  • Kick Timber the squirrel Astarion approves +1.
    • If you miss, try to kick her again Astarion approves +1
    • Playing as The Dark Urge, when confronted by a companion about kicking Timber, say she came right at you OR that your instincts are sharp Astarion approves +1 (either option)

While the Emerald Grove is preparing for the goblin attack

  • Tell Zevlor (or Asharak if Zevlor is dead) that you are here to take the grove for the goblins/came here with the goblins. Astarion approves +5
  • As the Dark Urge, tell Zevlor the goblin horde is yours. Astarion approves +1
  • Tell Mirkon you are not here to save them. Astarion approves +1
  • Tell Lakrissa to buy you a drink. Astarion approves +1
  • If you start attacking the Tieflings before Minthara arrives, betray her while speaking to her. Astarion approves +5
  • Tell Pandirna "I'm just here for the show. Make it a good one, won't you?" Astarion approves +1

Forest

Sunlit Wetlands/Putrid Bog

Blighted Village

  • Gain entrance to the village by either attacking the goblin at the eastern gate or by persuading the goblin booyahg at the southern gate, or performing for her as a Bard. Astarion approves +1
  • Intimidate Ornate Mirror in the Apothecary's Cellar into letting you pass. Astarion approves +1
  • Give Astarion the Necromancy of Thay during the cutscene. Astarion approves +5
  • Deliver the final blow to Fezzerk when confronting him near the windmill Astarion approves +1
  • Demand from Barcus Wroot to compensate your efforts after saving him from goblins. Astarion approves +1
  • Interrupt the bugbear and ogre in the barn Astarion approves +1
    • OR let Astarion interrupt them. Astarion approves +5
  • After summoning Lump the Enlightened and telling him your deal is done, let him have one lick. Astarion approves +1

Goblin Camp

At the front gate:

  • Fling worg dung at Sentinel Olak or him and the other guards at the check point. Astarion approves +1

At the outer camp:

  • Yell "Boo, get off the stage!" at Volo as he performs. Astarion approves +1
  • Stir the Owlbear Cub against the goblins through DC 15 Animal Handling check or DC 15 Persuasion check Astarion approves +1
  • When Krolla tries to scam you after you won chicken chase, demand your gold back and all of hers, too. Astarion approves +1
  • Tell Tracker Grikka that you will get answers from prisoners. Astarion approves +1
    • Playing as a Dwarf, ask Grikka to save a piece of dwarf meat for you. Astarion approves +1
  • Steal the ring from Crusher's foot after you kneel in front of him. Astarion approves +1
    • OR Make Crusher kneel and kiss your foot. Astarion approves +1
    • OR Make Crusher kiss your foot after defeating him in a fight. Astarion approves +1
    • Continue to attack Crusher after he is defeated, if he attacks you.Astarion approves +1 (Makes the whole camp hostile)

Inside the Shattered Sanctum:

  • If Warrior Trinzas questions you about the ruckus, tell her, it was the sound of her friends dying. Astarion approves +1
  • Tell Torturer Spike to let you show him how it's done. Astarion approves +1
    • Then torture Liam yourself. Astarion approves +1
  • Tell Roah Moonglow that you killed her friends in the Zhentarim Hideout. Astarion approves +1
  • Agree to endure Abdirak's teachings on Loviatar's doctrine. Astarion approves +5
  • Pick a fight with Priestess Gut in the throne room or in her chambers. Astarion approves +1
  • Tell Minthara that Sazza was too stupid to understand you
    • OR playing as a Drow say that she should have immediately recognize you as her superior. Astarion approves +1
  • Agree to attack the Grove with Minthara with or without asking for a reward. Astarion approves +1

In Worg Pens:

  • Tell goblin children to keep at the bear, aim for his eye, or to use sharper stones. Astarion approves +1
    • Throw a rock yourself. Astarion approves +1 (Makes Halsin hostile)
  • Turn down Halsin's request to help him save the grove in favor of saving yourself first. Astarion approves +1

The Risen Road

  • Side with Karlach during Wyll's confrontation with her. Astarion approves +2
  • At the tollhouse, tell the merchant Cyrel that you'll take the supplies and everything else she owns. Astarion approves +1
  • Order Flind to attack the survivors in the cave instead of you. Astarion approves +1
  • OR order Flind to attack other gnolls. Astarion approves +1
    • After the battle against gnolls, order Flind to off herself. Astarion approves +1
  • Tell Rugan that you are here for the cargo, not to rescue him. Astarion approves +1

Zhentarim Hideout

  • Kill Rugan on Zarys's order. Astarion approves +1
  • Kill Rugan, if he survived Zarys's torture and your fight against other Zentharim. Astarion approves +1
  • After purchasing Oskar Fevras, tell him first "My slaves do not speak until they are spoken to" and then "I don't make jokes with my slaves". Astarion approves +1

Waukeen's Rest

Underdark

  • Tell BOOOAL he is a fake god and tell him you'll just kill him and take his power Astarion approves +5
    • OR Agree to be BOOOAL's chosen Astarion approves +1
  • Agree to kill the duergar intruders for Sovereign Spaw Astarion approves +1
  • When speaking with Glut after defeating the duergar:
    • Agree to eliminate Spaw for Glut. Astarion approves +1
    • OR Refuse Glut saying that you'll have no part of this or that you'll kill the treacherous myconid instead. Astarion approves +1 (immediately starts fight with Glut)
  • Steal the Boots of Speed from Thulla. Astarion approves +1
  • Ask Baelen for compensation before throwing him a Misty Step scroll to escape the Bibberbang field. Astarion approves +1
  • Push Corsair Greymon off of the boat on your first voyage to Grymforge. Astarion approves +1

Grymforge

  • Decide to attack Morghal and Orgath after finding out they use slaves. Astarion approves +1

When dealing with Ward Magmar:

    • Ask Magmar how to get a slave of your own. Astarion approves +1
    • When attempting to take the elevator, tell Magmar that saving Nere is a distraction Astarion approves +1
    • When talking about travelling to Moonrise Towers, say that Moonrise holds the answers you need. Astarion approves +1
    • Playing as a Drow or as a Githyanki, tell Magmar that he is squandering his slave on mundane tasks. Astarion approves +1
    • After killing Magmar and Pistle, tell Skickpit to use the elevator to surface (further options to convince him won't bring more approval). Astarion approves +1
  • When Lunkbug tells you where to find Philomeen, answer that you'll take her head for a trophy. Astarion approves +1
    • After finding Philomeen (and letting her go away), talk to Lunkbug and mention she wants Laridda to move on, or tell Laridda directly. Astarion approves +1
  • Provoke a fight against Elder Brithvar by either taunting him to try and take your gold OR suggesting to rat him out to Sergeant Thrinn about his conspiracy against Nere Astarion approves +1
  • After rescuing Nere, tell him to finish the slaves, OR choose to say nothing Astarion approves +1
  • After killing Nere, tell Brithvar either that you think slaves are a valuable asset, OR tell him you won't interfere. Astarion approves +1
  • If you get to decide the gnomes' fate after Nere and Thrinn died, tell the duergar approaching you, that they will make a fine offering. Astarion approves +1

Crèche Y'llek

In the infirmary:

In the hatchery:

  • Tell Varsh Ko'kuu that if he gives you the githyanki egg you'll sell it at best price OR make yourself an omelette (either choise brings Astarion approves +1 and immediately starts the fight with Ko'kuu and hatchery guards)

In the training room:

  • Offer to fight Youth Varrl when Sa'varsh Kethk asks for a challenger Astarion approves +1, and then indeed kill him Astarion approves +1.
  • If you spared Youth Varrl and he thanks you, reply that you did it for the gold and tell him to pay up. Astarion approves +1
  • Refuse to show Kith'rak Therezzyn the Mysterious Artefact. Astarion approves +1
  • Ask the Inquisitor W'wargaz how he knows so much about you. Astarion approves +1
  • Ask the Inquisitor W'wargaz what you'll get in return for surrendering the weapon Astarion approves +1, and then:
    • Tell him you'll accept gold as a reward. Astarion approves +1
    • Playing as a Warlock, ask for treasure of immense power Astarion approves +1
    • Playing as a Rogue, ask for anything of immense value Astarion approves +1

    • Playing as a Warlock, when he says you understand how dangerous the wrong deal can be, reply that you can't fall into Raphael's trap. Astarion approves +1

Vampirism

  • At the Long Rest, when Astarion's true nature is revealed:
    • Say you trust him. Astarion approves +5
    • Let him bite you without threatening him. Astarion approves +10
    • OR Let him bite you but threaten to stake him if he goes too far. Astarion approves +1
  • The next morning, when other companions find out that Astarion is a vampire:
    • Say you think he won't hurt anyone of you Astarion approves +5
    • OR Tell them that if they don't like it, they can leave. Astarion approves +5
  • Agree with Astarion that him feeding on your enemies sounds good. Astarion approves +5
  • When he asks whose blood you'd hypothetically drink, name any other companion (including him, too). Astarion approves +1

If entering the Shadow-Cursed Lands from the Grymforge:

  • When Lassandra asks who's there, say you're a nightmare in the dark. Astarion approves +1
  • Playing as a Barbarian, answer Lassandra you're the one who will snap both her and her weapons in two. Astarion approves +1
  • Playing as a Sorcerer, tell Lassandra to kindly lower weapons or things might get ugly. Astarion approves +1
  • Playing as a Wild Magic Sorcerer, tell Lassandra to kindly lower your weapons, or who knows what your magic might do. Astarion approves +1
  • Playing as a Dark Urge, tell Lassandra you're an escaped lunatic. Astarion approves +1
  • Playing as a Vengeance Paladin, tell Lassandra you'll only take them down if they strike first Astarion approves +1
  • When the shadows warp Yonas, run away from the ambush Astarion approves +1

If entering the Shadow-Cursed Lands from the Rosymorn Monastery Trail:

  • Convince the hyena in the convoy that it doesn't belong to goblins and should leave them. Astarion approves +1
  • Order Warrior Gronag to fetch the bone, after he makes the same with the hyena. Astarion approves +1
  • Tell Kar'niss the drider they are amazing after watching them berate a goblin who "fed the shadows"
  • Convince the drider not to attack you if you killed the convoy before summoning him. Astarion approves +1
  • Traversing Shadow-Cursed Lands with the convoy, protect them and maintain your cover as a True Soul Astarion approves +1
    • After defeating Harpers, convince the drider through Deception to give you the lantern Astarion approves +1
    • Then use Deception again, and convince the drider to walk away into the shadows Astarion approves +1
  • Traversing Shadow-Cursed Lands with the convoy, side with the ambushing Harpers. After defeating the convoy, tell the Harpers' leader you're going to kill them and take the lantern.Astarion approves +1 (Taking this course starts the fight with ambushing Harpers immediately).
  • When talking to Dolly Thrice, ignore the pixie two times and keep the lantern. Astarion approves +1
  • When judging with He Who Was, order Madeline to stab herself, then to continue Astarion approves +1, and finally succeed a Persuasion roll to keep her going Astarion approves +1.

Last Light Inn

  • Tell Jaheira that you are here on holiday. Astarion approves +1
  • Refuse to drink the spiked wine when talking to Jaheira inside. Astarion approves +3
  • Help Mol to win the game against Raphael using the Sleight of Hand, Bard, Monk, or Wizard options. Astarion approves +1
    • After Raphael disappears, tell Astarion that carving scars in his back must have been excruciating Astarion approves +1 (Note:The cutscene continues towards this course only if you haven't seen his scars prior)
  • Talking to the Strange Ox, promise to keep its secret Astarion approves +1
    • Playing as The Dark Urge, give in to your urge to kill the Strange Ox. Astarion approves +1
  • Tell Isobel to 'follow the winged freak' (i.e. Marcus). Astarion approves +1
  • After Mol is taken during the assault, tell Mattis she's probably dead already. Astarion approves +1
  • Playing as The Dark Urge, tell Isobel that your blood orders you to kill her, then deny the urge, Astarion approves +1
  • Call Wulbren a prick when Barcus Wroot talks to him after you rescue him. Astarion approves +1
  • While talking to His Majesty via Speak with Animals:
    • Tell His Majesty that you want to admire him up close Astarion approves +1, and then choose to 'quietly admire him' Astarion approves +1
    • OR hiss back at His Majesty, tell him he's in your territory, and order to get out Astarion approves +1
    • OR playing as a Ranger, ensure him you don't seek his territory, only his time Astarion approves +1
    • OR playing as a Barbarian, bark at His Majesty Astarion approves +1

House in Deep Shadows

  • Beat Oliver at hide-and-seek without being spotted. Astarion approves +1
  • Ask Oliver whether he doesn't have anyone else to play with, and then about his parents' names are. Then, after a successful passive DC 14 Wisdom check, offer him to come to your camp and agree to play with him after he declines. Once Oliver explains the rules, tell him that you've changed your mind. Astarion approves +1 (immediately starts the fight with Oliver's 'family' )

Reithwin Town

House of Healing

  • Convince Malus Thorm to order his sisters to hone their blades on each other.Astarion approves +1
  • Persuade Malus Thorm to operate on himself. Astarion approves +1
  • Convince Malus Thorm to take the place of his patient and submit to sisters' curing. Astarion approves +2 (comes one point by another subsequently).

The Waning Moon

  • Safely drink with Thisobald Thorm (rolling Saving Throw, either general or class-based) OR successfully imitate drinking (rolling Sleight of Hand), up to two times total (Astarion approves +1 each time)
  • Successfully entertain the brewer with your stories (through Performance roll), up to two times (Astarion approves +1 each time). If Performance roll failed, successful subsequent Deception roll earns a point of Approval, nonetheless.

Moonrise Towers

  • Sever the connection between Linsella and Barnabus Astarion approves +1
  • Tell Araj Oblodra that Astarion is his own person Astarion approves +5
  • Support Astarion's decision on biting Araj, telling her 'He said no, what's to discuss.'Astarion approves +5
  • Tell Astarion that he shall not do anything he doesn't want to, when Araj asks you to pressure him into taking her offer Astarion approves +5
  • Kill Fezzerk without combat (through dialogue options) Astarion approves +1
  • Successfully distract Disciple Z'rell with "your lusts for Astarion" when she searches your mind for proof of your faith Astarion approves +1 (Note: This option is available only if you're romancing the spawn)
  • Ask Disciple Z'rell to show the power the Absolute has given her Astarion approves +1
  • Tell Questioner Jasin "The only thing I'm going to break is you" when Minthara is being erased. Astarion approves +1

  • When talking to Jaheira after killing Ketheric Thorm, ask her if she is having fun, then tell her that you're "having the time of your life." Astarion approves +1

Gauntlet of Shar

  • After interacting with the Pedestal of Reckoning, agree to help Shadowheart with the trials. Astarion approves +1
  • Persuade Balthazar to give you the bell to summon Flesh Astarion approves +1
    • With Mother Dearest in your inventory, ask "What happened to your mother?"
      • Say "Actually, I have your mother."
        • Say "No, I think I'll keep her." Astarion approves +1
  • Tell him the carving must have been excruciating after the initial conversation about his scars with Raphael. Astarion approves +1
  • Attack Yurgir. Astarion approves +5
  • Talk to Yurgir about his pact instead of attacking him immediately Astarion disapproves -1, then pass an insight check (unless playing as a Bard or Warlock) and three Persuasion checks to get him to kill his Merregons, his Displacer Beast and himself. Astarion approves +5
  • If you agreed to help Yurgir, reassure Astarion that this is all part of the plan. Astarion approves +1
  • Detect thoughts on the Hoarding Merregon and ask for the potions used to charm the Displacer Beast. Astarion approves +1

Mind Flayer Colony

Camp/Conversation

  • Tell him it makes sense to enlist Raphael's help with investigating his scars.
  • Tell him that of course you'll help hunt down and kill Cazador. Astarion approves +5
  • Tell Arabella her parents are dead. Astarion approves +1

Act Three
